My doctor mentioned, at the end of appointment, that scan showed I had a fatty liver. I saw on Burning Feather's diagnose me thread it mentioned.
She said be careful with alcohol consumption, we didn't talk more. What do you do about it? Can it be healed, corrected?

I have a fatty liver. My doctor never even told me to avoid alcohol. I'm not a heavy drinker but I do drink. The only thing I was told was to eat a more balanced diet and to lose weight. You definitely can reverse it through weight loss. Of course if you aren't overweight and aren't a big drinker, yours could be genetic or related to certain medications. I would definitely talk to your doctor about it because I believe if it worsens it could lead to cirrhosis, which is very bad.

I just read an article the other day about fatty livers. It gave 5 tips for helping to correct it. One was stop eating high fructose corn syrup. Basically the Dr who wrote the article said fatty livers are the next biggest health threat behind obesity nowadays and it's caused by the American diet. So many tens of thousands of people die every year from liver disease and he basically linked it all back to diet.
Now, I subscribe to a lot of crunchy whole food pages on Facebook since we eat a whole foods diet and I like the recipes. So I wouldn't take it at face value since there is obviously some bias. But I do know that HFCS has to be broken down by your liver and they speculate that our livers are "overloaded" since everything in the store contains HFCS these days. The liver converts the HFCS to stored fat rather than cellular energy and because people are consuming so much of it it builds up.
I'll see if I can find the article.

My father passed away from liver cancer at 58. Partly because he was a smoker, partly because he was taking Lipitor for high blood pressure but he also had an undiagnosed weak liver. It was a trifecta of sorts that led to the liver cancer which took him suddenly.
His death, I believe saved my life. His liver Doctor suggested for me to have a liver biopsy which found that my liver was in a pre-cirrhosis stage due to the same undiagnosed genetic liver disease. I found a good heptalogist who instructed me to start taking milk thistle along with a low sugar diet. I took Metformin (sp?) for a while to help with insulin as he believed that was a problem also being caused by my liver.
I have been taking milk thistle for over 5 years now and my routine liver panel (every six months) has been normal the past couple of years. I am a big believer in Milk Thistle. I would most certainly talk to your doctor about it. I know it has really turned things around for me.
I wish you the best of luck with your health.

I know a lot of people don't like Dr Oz but he talked about this on the show last week. I haven't watched the episode yet (it's recorded) but there is probably some info on his site. kellybelly77 what are some of the pages you follow on Facebook?

Years ago I was diagnosed with fatty liver, had a biopsy, liver enzymes were very high. I think I remember being told to limit alcohol All this happened as a result of massive doses of prednisone for several years and a 60 pound weight gain. I've lost the weight and my liver function is now back to normal. Good luck!

My mom was diagnosed with a fatty liver 5 years before she died. They said not to worry, so she didn't. They did a biopsy and said it was ok. No worries.
6 months before she passed they told her she had cirrhosis of the liver and it was in the last stage. She was not a drinker at all.
Mom needed a translate, but at 64, was really too old to be a good candidate.
We have since been told the fatty liver was a huge red flag - mom should have been told to lose weight. It might not have saved her but it would have extended her life. And no, she was not morbidly obese or anything.
I have a fatty liver - and I am doing everything I can to lose weight, not take any pills (taking pills causes your liver to work harder) or drink alcohol. Liver failure is a horrible, horrible painful way to die.
I dont want to scare you, but I *personally* would get real serious about having a fatty liver. You can reverse the damage if it hasn't gone too far.

Dh has it and we have no idea why. He has never had alcohol. Well, I think he tried once and hated the taste. He has put himself on a strict diet and that has helped.

It really doesn't have as much to do with alcohol as you might think. I'm watching the Dr Oz show now and Dr Mark Hyman is talking about it. He said to avoid high fructose corn syrup and other sugar, eat 1-2 cups of phytonutrients vegetables a day, add onion, garlic or turmeric to at least one meal a day, and eat healthy fats such as coconut oil, salmon, avocado, olive oil and nuts. They also said that milk thistle tea can help some as well.
If you don't do anything to reverse it, it can turn to cirrhosis.
