Teaching their kids why they do what they do. It occurred to me that I should do the same with my grandson. My DH and DS run a construction business... I take care of my grandson & every day we spend 30 min or so at their office to break up his commute... I realized today that this is an opportunity to show grandson ( now 2 yo) what his dad & Pa do for a living..

Very cool.
I've learned what shiplap is, what a pergola is (even though I think it's dumb), and that almost every kitchen needs an island from that show.

I love that show. They both seem like nice people.

Well the point of my post is that I need to show my grandson what his daddy and Pa do for a living. I think it's good for kids to know what their parents do to provide for them.,

I agree. When DD was about 6, she went to Take Our Daughters to Work Day with her dad, and they had one activity where they asked the kids what their parents did for work. What does your Dad do? He goes to meetings. What does your Mom do? She fires people. And, just to clarify, yes, working in HR sometimes involves ending employment of staff, but it is not that frequent of a thing!! But it made us both realize that she doesn't really have a sense of our jobs or why we do what we do.

Well the point of my post is that I need to show my grandson what his daddy and Pa do for a living. I think it's good for kids to know what their parents do to provide for them., We own a small business and my son frequently goes to work with Daddy. He's made himself a greeter and will say "Hi, welcome to [Business Name]. How can we help you today?" At 5, we've never taught him to say this, he's just picked up on it through observation and through his own warm personality. I think it's an important part of our family life, it's an important part of his heritage (DH is 5th generation small business owner in the same industry as the 4 before him), and so it's becoming important to him, too. I didn't know before we had him what I'd think about this, but I'm really loving how it's becoming part of his view of his world, part of his ideology about work, etc. So all that to say, I affirm your decision, but you're right, it's easy to not intuitively think about at first.

Maybe I just can't understand the point of a pergola because I'm from the Northeast, but they do seem pretty pointless--though aesthetically pleasing enough. Someone please tell me otherwise! My family is mystified by the pergola-love! And thanks for posting, OP. I just asked my 13 yo son what he thinks I do at work and he said "go on the internet." Well work on that with him as well as my 4 year old DD.

I never got the whole pergola thing until I moved to the Nottheast and I have ran across some really nice ones covered in Ivy (I guess it's ivy lol..its green!).

I like the architectural element that pergolas provide to the yard. I have also recently seen some remote controlled covers you can install.
As for the OP, I agree and think it is very important. DH is an occupational therapist. We have talked about it and have decided that it is important they spend time at his work for several reasons. To see what he does to provide for the family and just know what he does while he is not at home and also, to learn be comfortable with the elderly from a young age.

Wisteria (and other flowering vine) covered pergolas are very beautiful...but usually, bee, wasp and ant infested. Oh, and teaching the next generation about your family's legacy is a huge blessing and admirable.

For us, it's more for a tiny bit of shade, and it makes the backyard have more interest. We were in our last house for 10 years, and our backyard was boring as heck! If we had added a pergola, it would have at least added some interest.

I think that is wonderful. I don't think many people now take the time to teach and inspire and that is how some youth is lost. Hubby has always taught the girls what he does and why it matters through conversations, community events and just by showing them things. My job, Admin work might not be glamours but the girls know what I do and know why its important for my company. They have all come to work with me and it amazed them at how much went into admin work.
Good for you all showing them what is involved. Blue collar jobs are seen as not as important as being a doctor or lawyer but how many kids can build a building, make a piece of furniture, know the basics of plumbing and electrical...Teaching them knowledge is a valuable thing.

I think they're dumb too. A couple friends of mine just spent a lot of money putting one in on their new house and were so excited about it. When I saw pictures I just kept thinking "why???" I clearly don't get the point of a pergola.

It is important to tell your kids what you do, and keep telling them in different, age appropriate ways. Growing up I would always ask my mom what my dad did. She would say he works on big machines at the plant. Same answer every time, no expansion over the years so at some point I just stopped asking. I bought my first house at 24 years old and had an issue with dimming lights. My dad is super handy so at Thanksgiving dinner that year I ask him if he knows anything about electric systems. Everyone at the table bursts out laughing because my dad is an ELECTRICIAN! I had no clue because he never talked about what he did at work and my mom gave me that same stupid answer for years. I look at my six year old and think she would understand an electrician job description so I have no clue why my mom kept saying he works on machines and didn't explain the electrician part.

It was important to us that our girls knew exactly what we did for a living. One or the other came to "Take Your Child to Work" day every year when they were young. They were limited to where they could go, but they did get to see some of our work areas. There is a LOT of misconception about our careers... in federal prison.
