I have several binders that I am going to put our DVDs in, getting rid of the cases. But I can't decide how I want to organize! My holiday DVDs are in their own box already. But then do I want to just do alphabetical, or categorical? Do Disneys all to themselves? I love organizing, and have had the stuff to do this for months, and now have the time, so help!

I put our DVD's into binders too. It just made sense to put the Disney & PG family type movies together. The adult R movies are together, etc. All of the romantic type "mom" movies are together lol. No right or wrong way!

I like them in their cases, but if I were doing a binder I'd...
Kids movies all together, then alphabetical order Adult/joint movies alphabetical order
Separate binder for adult, but not appropriate for kids (no not that kind...something like Dogma or Clerks or ones that just shouldn't been seen by young-ins).

Ours have all been copied onto my DH's computer and saved on a hard drive. Bye-bye, DVDs!

I like them in the cases too, it seems we pick them much faster than when we have to flip through a binder and definitely faster than when they are online. OMG it can literally take 45 minutes for DH to choose something that way! We have them in different different drawers, alphabetically, in the following categories:
* TV Series * Christmas * Children's * Series (like Star Wars, Bourne, Hunger Games)
The rest are in 2 drawers alphabetically. I didn't want to make things too hard to find or put away. But lately I realized we are most often in the mood for a type of movie, so I will probably further separate into these categories:
* Cooking (Chef, Burnt, 100 ft Journey, etc) * Sports/Inspiring (Radio, Draft Day, Rudy, etc) * End of World (Deep Impact, Armegeddon, 2012, etc) * Musicals
My best advice would be to file them how you would think to look for them. But def have a separate children's binder.

I agree with Dewryce--sort them by how you would look for them. Kid, drama, action, comedy, etc. best of all, you can resort them as the kids get older or the criteria for choosing a movie is different. When my kids were tweens, I had a section for that as well as the kid movies. Sometimes they wanted old favorites and sometimes they wanted to watch something more "grown up". (Think along the lines for Percy Jackson or National Treasure.)

Ours are alphabetical. I downloaded an app that I used to scan them all in, so we can browse the app when we feel like watching something.

Ours are alpha because it's easier with three people searching and putting away (or not).
My sister is putting hers in a binder and will be sorting by categories. She has two younger kids so that makes more sense for her family.

So my quirky OCD is going to show here. For the last two or three years I've been buying everything in digital format on Amazon. But pre Amazon I have over 700 DVDs. Which are now in 4 DVD binders. I have an excel spreadsheet printed that has them all listed alphabetically and then lists the page number of the binder they are in. I made a few lists at the back that list all the Disney movies, one for holiday movies, one for trilogy/boxed set movies, and one for horror movies. So we just flip through my printout, so easy. But I've been buying them little by little on Amazon too.

Ours are sorted by who watches them (mine are separate from my teens & my husband doesn't watch, so his are waaaaay in the back of the bottom shelf, lol) for the most part.
The boys' are all in a jumbled mess on the 2 shelves I allotted to them. Mine are separated into 4 categories: TV shows, holiday, scary & misc. All movies w/in the misc. category are alphabetized.
Now that I'm typing it out, I'm realizing what a wacky system this really is, lol!

Now that I'm typing it out, I'm realizing what a wacky system this really is, lol! Yes, but does it work? The best system is the one that is used consistently!

Ours are alphabetical within categories and we keep them in the cases. I used a labelmaker to label the shelves with our categories so even a guest (or my teenager) can use the system.

I don't separate DVD from blu-ray. I do separate TV from movies. TV series are on one shelf, alpha by series and then in chronological order by season.
Kid movies are also on a separate shelf, where Nieces and Nephews can get to them. Disney movies are in chronological order by original release date. The other kid movies in alphabetical order.
The rest of the movies take up two other shelves. They are in alphabetical order. I keep movie series together in chronological order, but fit them in the alpha order by the name of the first movie. I.e. Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay 1&2 are in the H's. I like seeing my varied movie taste on display, with an action movie next to a romantic comedy next to a cheesy 80's movie.
My favorites are on a shelf by themselves. Included in that are the full Harry Potter set, in order, Series One of Doctor Who (the re-boot, not the original), and the entire Firefly series plus the movie, Serenity. I would have more Doctor Who, but I only own Series One so far.
Christmas movies are with my Christmas decorations, and only come out after Thanksgiving.
This is my current configuration, and I'm pretty happy with it. Every once in a while I like to change things up, though. Sometimes I organize my movies by genre. Sometimes I mix my movies and TV together (but not the kid movies) and alphabetize the whole thing.

Mine are in the cases still. I don't think I'll take them out ever. Easier to sell or loan out, and I don't really buy any anyway.
Mine are organized mostly by genre.

I tossed the binders last year and bought a ton of these: dvd sleeves now instead of four bulky binders we have three plastic shoe boxes of dvds and it's so easy to flip through... one is for kid stuff, one is for movies and one is for TV series. No one would put the dvds back in the binders but with the sleeves it's pretty easy. I love this system.
