My husband and I are going to Enid, OK for a wedding on October 8. We will be taking our RV so we will be staying for an extra week. Neither one of us has ever been to Oklahoma so I thought I would get some suggestions from the Peas. Should we head west or east? We looked at Turner Falls, OK which looks amazing. We like to hike, bike and motorcycle ride.

Will the Salt Plains still be open on October, for digging? not sure if that's still allowed. But it is different.
If you go east you'll be in Pioneer Woman country, Pawhuska. Doesn't she have a store opening soon? That route will be more rural, likely less traffic than going south to Turner Falls.
You could go on to Ozarks or Oklahoma lakes from there. Tulsa and Bartlesville are nice too. Bartlesville has Price Tower, by Frank Lloyd Wright if you want landmarks.

I've got to be honest-there isn't much to do there. We lived in Enid for about a year and I can remember bringing people to see a sod house an hour or so away near Cleo Springs. And there was a Target in Oklahoma City that we used to go to.
Vance AFB is there and may give some sort of tour. We used to watch planes take off from the runway.
The Pioneer Woman is opening a mercantile and deli in Pawhuska, OK. I follow her blog and they have been testing recipes and discussing some of the merchandise. They restored a huge old building in town and I think it would be fun to see that.

Just Reread you have a week. You can cover most central and eastern Oklahoma in that time!
You could also head west and go to Palo Duro Canyon, by Amarillo Tx. It's about five hours away from Enid. That trip could be fun, less trees, depending on what you want.

Eastern Oklahoma is pretty that time of year. Turner Falls is also worth the visit.

Thanks for the suggestions ladies, will definately be checking those out. We don't plan to stay in Enid past the wedding festivities on Sunday and we are already planning a tour of Vance as the groom is an Air Force pilot there.

The salt plains are open until Oct. 15th, and you can dig for salt crystals there if you'd like. The salt plains aren't far from Enid. Going west from there, there are the Alabaster caverns and Little Sahara sand dunes near Woodward (the caverns are good for spelunking and you can rent dune buggies to offroad through the sand dunes). If you enjoy hiking, the Talimena State Park trails in eastern Oklahoma often have beautiful leaf color at that time of year.
October is generally one of the few times of the year when it's nice to be outside in Oklahoma, so you have great timing!

Go to Grand Lake. Stay in Bernice at the state park or stay near Grove. Both are very pretty in October.
If you have time, go to Har-Ber Village Museum. It's a really cool place! It's not that just a museum. You can walk around outside and down by the lake. So much cool stuff there to see. And the entrance drive is amazing! Have fun!
Alabaster Caverns are also very cool!

I agree w/ styxgirl about the Grand Lake area. It is beautiful in October.
It's a little out of the way, but you might want to drive through Oklahoma City on your way to Grand Lake and see the bombing memorial.
If you decide to go to the Grand Lake area, send me a private message and maybe we can meet up. I think we will be at our lake house for much of October.

beaversbend.comNot sure if you want to travel very far outside of Enid, but Beaver's Bend area would be great too. There is also Roman Nose State park closer to the Enid area.

I encourage you to visit the Salt Plains even if you don't dig for crystals. It is an ancient seabed and just a spectacular vista. You can find crystals just by walking around. No real need to dig (but kids enjoy the digging) It is one of very few places you can find selenite crystals. The other places are in China. I am partial to the Wichita Wildlife Refuge (southwest corner of the state) Long horn, bison, deer, and other wildlife are often visible. Lots of good trails for hiking. there is a free center with exhibits about the wild life that inhabits the refuge. Very informative. Mount Scott is one of the tallest peaks in Oklahoma. Meers Diner is an old diner that was highlighted on Guy Fieri's Dives, Diners, and Drive-ins. It has been a decades long favorite place to stop for a long-horn burger (the thing takes up an entire pie plate. We normally share!) The refuge has camping areas. There is a wind farm not far from the refuge, Medicine Park is a small town made of naturally occuring cobblestone (also found in few parts of the world and China being the other place) The have some unique little gifty types of shops. It is just a nice place to wander down the street and enough the stroll. Week ends often have music festivals and such going on. CHeck out www.travelok.com/article_page/top-fall-events-in-oklahoma If you have a junk email sign up for their email lists. You'll get notifications of all kinds of things going on in the upcoming months across the state.

If you are going to Turner Falls then head to the east to Sulpher OK, Chickasaw National Rec Area. Little Niagara at Travertine Falls-Sulphur, OK. I was actually thinking of a day trip there at the end of Sept when my husband and I are off work for a week.
I would highly recommend a drive through downtown OKC. Look at the federal bombing memorial. It's very moving and quite memorable. A few blocks to the south is a lovely park and has exhibits. I can't remember the name but it's right next door to the NBA basketball arena.

This thread is really making me miss Oklahoma! The Wildlife Refuge and Medicine Park were my usual weekend haunts. Medicine Park actually has several charming cabins you can rent. One of my favorites, though it's more remote, is Scenic Ridge. The town is small, often with live music and an assortment of events. You can even check out Geronimo's grave site at Ft. Sill. There are also a lot of casinos, if that's something you'd enjoy.
I'll also second the OKC Memorial. Especially at night. It is a very emotional experience. You can also take a boat tour through Bricktown that is quite enjoyable. Most of all, enjoy the beauty of the prairie and the red clay earth!

Oklahoma has a little bit of everything! It's perfect for a road trip. If you're into Route 66 take ten minutes for the historic Round Barn at Arcadia and a longer wait at Pop's, a new landmark cafe. www.pops66.com/ Wait until Oklahoma City or Stillwater (Eskimo Joes) for food. It's not far off I-35 if you're headed to south from Enid to Turner Falls. My only caution is about Autumn Color. Eastern Oklahoma can be beautiful, but the color will not be exciting if you're coming from a state further east or northeast. But there is still good hiking, nice drives and fun places to stop.
