My son has decided he wants birthday brownies instead of birthday cake so I was thinking maybe making them from scratch.
Do you have a tried and true recipe?

Ina Gartens Outrageous Brownies. Makes a lot, but they freeze well. Hands down best brownies ever made.

I know this isn't traditional brownies.. but the Pioneer Woman's chocolate sheet cake is my son's absolute favorite. Kinda close to a brownie... lol.... Once cooled you can cut into squares like a brownie... Oh so delish!!!!

Hmm.... They're not scratch, but the Ghiradelli Dark Chocolate brownies are REALLY good. They're an extra special treat around here!

When I get on a quest for the "best" of a recipe I will ride it into the ground! It took me several years but I have several brownies recipes now that I consider the epitome of what makes a great brownie. Some people like theirs cakey, some like tar. Personally I want a punch of rich chocolate right to the mouth. To that end my favs after trying just about every recipe I could get my hands on are these: StinkyRose's (Kami's) brownie recipe, which is a true pea favorite and asked for many times. Just search and it'll pop right up. West Tenth Street Brownies (Awesome recipe. These are the ones I do for special occasions and family gatherings.) www.nickmalgieri.com/recipes/west-tenth-street-brownies/

I second the suggestion of Stinky Rose's brownies. They are really easy to make and sinfully good.

I love Ina Garten's Outrageous Brownie recipe as well. However, it does use instant coffee (not a lot, but you can taste a bit of it) and you might want to leave out or subsitute. It has never failed me.

I used to love the Brownies Cockaigne recipe in my old Joy of Cooking. Don't know if it's still in the newer versions. I also made the StinkyRose brownies once and they were very good. But I quit making brownies from scratch when I started getting the Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate brownie mix from Costco. Seriously the best. Lots of other peas have said the same thing before, so it's not just me. Comes with six baggies of mix. I use two baggies at a time and bake in a 9x13. Directions are on the box. Don't overbake.

Ina Garten's Outrageous Brownies are referred to as crack brownies in our house. Older DS is out of college for 4 years now and I still get texts from his former housemates asking for some.

I made these, but bought a box of brownies just in case I screwed them up How'd they turn out? I hope you didn't need the back-up box!

Ina Gartens Outrageous Brownies. Makes a lot, but they freeze well. Hands down best brownies ever made. I like them - they're very good. I just made them last week and they were really excellent. But they don't quite beat the one bowl brownies off the Baker's box, not for me anyway. That has been my go to recipe for brownies for 30 years now. I keep trying other things (especially as I am a big Ina fan) but I always go back to the one bowl brownies.

I made these, but bought a box of brownies just in case I screwed them up How'd they turn out? I hope you didn't need the back-up box! They are very good, but super rich and fairly dense. The good news is they won't disappear as fast as brownies usually do because you only need to eat small pieces (instead of the row my kids usually eat).
