we are probably going to refinish our hardwood floors in within the next year or two. I was talking with my neighbor yesterday and she told me that after the floors are refinished you have to keep dogs and cats off of them for two weeks because their nails can ruin the finish. Is this true?

I haven't had mine refinished - ever - and they are 90 years old! My sister had hers done about 20 years ago, and they couldn't put area rugs down for 30 days - so I would imagine it takes a while for the finish to cure. Just like paint. It takes a long time before it is actually cured. But they may have newer finishes out now that don't requite that.

We had our oak floors refinished just over 3 years ago. They never mentioned that at all. We did take all the animals and check into a hotel for a couple of days during the refinishing, but did nothing special once we moved back in. The floors look fine now. I would bring that up with the floor refinishers when you get quotes and see what they say.

I think it is always wise to let paint/finishes cure completely. We did our floors ourselves and left the furniture off of them for about four days. I also glued felt onto every leg of furniture that we put back on the floors. We were very careful for about two weeks. After that we used as usual. That was maybe ten years ago and my floors are still beautiful. We did put seven or eight coats of clear on the floor. My daughter brings her dog down here a lot and it has been no problem.

It wouldn't be a problem to move out of the house for a few days for the actual refinishing but to move back in and keep the dog and cat off the floors for 2 weeks would be tough! I had never heard of that before so will definitely ask about it when start getting quotes.

We finished our floors (4 coats of polyurethane) and kept off for four days after the final coat but that is it. It has been about 16 years, with a 60-80 pound dog most of that time. Our old dog would play fetch in the house, so a dog running and sliding on the floors for 7-8 years of that.
