We are headed north either tomorrow or Wednesday (7/26 or 7/27) on I-75. Wondering where the most road construction is around Atlanta right now - go straight through or on the bypass? Not sure what time we'll hit there, not sure when we're leaving. Just trying to avoid the most construction (hard, I know!) Thanks for any advance info I can get.

Out Texas Department of Transpportation website has information on construction and road closures, perhaps Georgia's does. Not quite as good as a local telling you which areas to avoid like the plague, but some helpful info.

Georgia has a 511 App that might help you some. However, I find that there is no "good" time for traffic in that area!

Last week we were driving through there on the way to Florida and on the Georgia side of Atlanta a little ways between Atlanta and Macon it took us an hour to go 10miles due to night time road work.
ETA it was after 11pm we drove through Atlanta and it wasn't bad at all. Our trouble was outside of atlanta

South of Atlanta- from Locust Grove up past 675 is a permanent construction zone and I swear there's traffic there 24 hours a day. If downtown isn't blocked by a wreck you're probably better off going straight through since you can do the HOV lane. Just breathe deep and be patient. Good luck!

Good luck! Call 511 and find out what is congested and watch signage that tells you drive time. We go out of our way to miss construction and traffic around Jodeco Rd exit and Hudson Bridge exit.

DH can't see well at night so we try not to drive too late, hoping to miss the late night construction, that is really hard for him driving wise.

My husband has never taken the bypass around Atlanta. He says it's not worth it and you couldn't pay me enough to drive in the Atlanta area. Save

Never, ever take the by-pass. It is a mess and there are always accidents and backups. Going straight through on I-75 is the safest and the fastest way through. (Still not great) You will run into a lot of construction north of Atlanta so be prepared for that. I don't know about construction south of Atlanta. If you have a smartphone and download the Inrix Traffic App, it can show you where all the construction is, where accidents are and any backups. Have a safe trip.

Thanks for all the help - Atlanta is the worst part of the drive (from Cape Coral, FL to just south of Nashville, TN). But grandchildren will be waiting at the other end this time!! It's a lot shorter than driving to where they (the grands) live ... they're just outside Portland, OR. It's a long drive for us, we know... we've done it. We don't like to fly (bad experience, no more flights for me) and do enjoy most of the driving, but Atlanta is a royal pain!

Every time I go to Atlanta traffic gets backed up near Lovejoy because of construction. I swear that construction is going on it's 3 rd year or so too.

There is a lot of congestion and construction at 75 N and 285 by-pass - taking the bypass won't help in this area.
This is where they are building the new Braves stadium. If you can drive through Atlanta between 11 am and 2 pm - that would be the best time.

I took the kids to Six Flags last week. I hit some major road construction on 285. I'd avoid that and just go up 75. You'll still most likely hit some, but I don't think it'll be as bad as the stuff on 285.

We are leaving north Atlanta today going south. Do you know how much I dread it? I've lived in the Atlanta area most of my life and getting older plus traffic doesn't mix well. It takes forever to get out of the suburbs just to get on our way.

We left north metro Atlanta to go to Florida last week and returned yesterday. The trip down was a piece of cake compared to coming home. I've lived in Atlanta for 59 years and it's always been that way, only gets worse with time. I seriously don't understand why they don't do something about it. It's a major thoroughfare for truckers and vacationers, not to mention the 6 million of us suckers who live here. My advice - skip the drive and book a flight!
