I was fine when I woke up this morning, took my daughter to school and came home and ate a cherry pop tart. I was cleaning the kitchen and my right upper lip started feeling weird, kind of like numbness from the dentist. Looked in the mirror and it is pretty swollen. I have no idea what it could be from, I have had a cherry pop tart before but it's been months. I haven't used anything else new. Any thoughts? I popped a Benadryl hoping it will help. Thanks!

Could be although it's strange it's just one. You weren't stung by something were you?

Last year the same thing happened to my husband. Only his upper lip, and it swelled considerably. Turns out it was a reaction to one of his high blood pressure meds.

Something similar happened to me several months ago. Very swollen lips and then they were extremely chapped. It lasted a few weeks. Could not figure it out. I was snacking on about 10 almonds at work every morning. Had been for years. Ran out. No more swollen/chapped lips since. No more almonds for me. Even if it was a fluke.
Hope you figure it out soon.

I've dealt with something similar. It ballooned out of no where (literally) and lasted for almost a week. Happened several more times in the course of the next two years. Long story short, through a process of elimination I determined it was being caused by my Bert's Bees chapstick. Once I quit using it I did not have another lip swelling until about a year ago when I decided to try it again and, yep within 24 hours I looked like I'd been in prize fight!
Ironically I'd been using Bert's Bees for years without an reaction so I'm not sure why it started out of the blue.

Is it limited to your one lip? No swelling on tongue, cheek? I would imagine it would be something like chapstick, lipstick, ect. If it's an allergic reaction hopefully the benadryl will work quickly.

I took the Benadryl hours ago and no improvement. I don't have any idea what it could be! If it doesn't go away by tomorrow I will make a dr appointment. Thanks again!

Sorry the benadryl didn't work! Glad you are going to the doctor, though. Hope you feel better soon.

I had some sort of reaction and first my lower lip swelled then my upper lip. I looked so pretty! I got meds from my doctor and the swelling went down in about an hour. Couldn't really pinpoint the cause until last winter when I had some blood drawn and the bandaid produced a huge rash.
I'm now the proud owner of a latex allergy, as noted on my medical and dental charts. Because I realized I'd had a dental checkup the day of my lips swelling and they used latex gloves, they tied the two together.

Do you take Lisinopril by chance?
What about other meds?

I had the same reaction to the Burt's Bee Lip Balm. I went to the dermatologist, who said that allergic reactions can occur from any product at any time. Usually, the reaction will occur with the use of the product/food at least two times. My lips were swollen and oozing, so I used a steroid creme.

When I was younger I had allergic reactions to some foods if I ate too much. Eggs and Chocolate (that was a killer on Easter). This went on through my twenties. My top lip would swell first. Sometimes that was all that would swell sometimes it would be my eyes too. Those were fun times.

my lip would swell when I used any product with Salicylate. It is in Aspirin, Vic's vapor rub and a lot of the over the counter medicines.

I had the same thing happen to my lower lip last Thursday. It finally cleared up today. My two guesses were sun blisters or Peruvian food (first time trying it). Now I am thinking it could be chapstick.

The component in burts bee products is called propylis, bee glue. It's found in many mascara and cosmetics.

My DD has swelling of her upper lip on occasion...she attributes it to allergies but she has never been tested so she doesn't know what specifically she is allergic to.
