It seems the icey shower many of us took and the money raised from the challenge have paid off. Scientist, using some of the money raised during the ice bucket challenge, have detected a new gene responsible for ALS localfox news
I hope this gets us closer to helping those with ALS.

That is pretty cool!
So many times research is underfunded - I am glad to see the public getting involved, and raising awareness and some funds.

That's fabulous news. I'd be interested in knowing more about whether scientists from different countries are working together on this, or is every country doing their own thing?
The ice bucket challenge also happened in Australia. I'm not sure how much money it raised, but not as much as in the US obviously! For the last 2 years the AFL (Australian Football League) has run a "Big Freeze" challenge where football and media personalities have to slide into a pool of ice water to raise money. It came about when a retired football player and coach was diagnosed with MND (it is called MND in some countries, not ALS).
It's such an awful disease. Detecting the gene is hopefully the first step in finding a cure or at least a more effective treatment to help prolong people's lives.

My beautiful, loving and most amazing future mother in law has ALS. She was diagnosed a year ago June and the disease has progressed much more rapidly than anyone thought it would. It is hideous, vile and heartbreaking and we are SO thankful for the ALS Foundation, the Angel Fund and every, single, solitary person who takes this ice bucket challenge!! We do a mass one every September at the end of the Walk of Hope and it's really something to see!
Please...keep the challenge going and keep the funds coming!! The victims and their families appreciate it more than you could ever know.

Could someone explain how dumping a bucket of water on your head and putting it on social media raised money? Im being serious, not snarky. I want to know how this works.

It's a challenge where you nominate people to either do the challenge or forfeit by making a contribution to ALS. We choose to do both every year at the ALS Walk of Hope in our area. Ice Bucket Challenge
Here is my grandson #1 and fiancé doing the group challenge last year Attachment Deleted

It's a challenge where you nominate people to either do the challenge or forfeit by making a contribution to ALS. So, if they are dumping ice water on their heads, they're not donating? I'm not sure how that helps, unless they are like you and they do the challenge AND donate. It would seem that those who forfeit and donate make the biggest difference. Though I guess it's not as attention grabbing on social media when you just quietly make a contribution to a cause you want to help.

A lot?) of people probably do both. I think the main objective is to get ALS into the minds of the masses to get general donations and the challenge videos sure do that. it started here in Boston and was kind of a "call out" to some of the originator's friends to donate. He was an ALS victim himself and he got this challenge out there.

I'm really surprised that there was actually money raised with this campaign because it came across as one of the most slacktivist trendy things to do. No one I know that did it raised any money, they just did the stupid ice shower to look cool on Facebook.

I guess I am happily shocked that people actually donated enough money to make a difference. I truly do not know a single person who did the ice bucket challenge as anything other than a fad to post on social media and they never even talked about donating. All I saw was tremendous peer pressure to have ice dumped on you, literally nothing about donating. Glad to know people did make donations.

I can only speak for my circle of friends/acquaintances but I know that those that did the challenge also donated. A dear friend of mine was diagnosed 2 years ago. Our department did a huge fundraising effort with the ice bucket challenge for it.
Whether someone donated or not, I am so glad to hear that there have been some advancements in the search for a cure. It's a terrible disease.

If even half if the people that did the challenge donated, that is still a good summer of money. Then you had celebrities and others that donated larger sums than the $10 we were doing here.
