We purchased the car from Carmax. While we were inspecting it, I noticed two chips in the windshield. I can feel them on the out side if I run my finger over them. They are not smooth, and catch my finger. The sales person wrote them down as repairs that were agreed upon, with the sale. DS spent 3.5 hours yesterday, sitting in the Carmax lounge, to get floor mats, and 2 light bulbs changed. They told him the chips were already filled, and fine. I have no experience with windshield repair. When I drove his car, I could see a prism coming through one of the chips. I'm 5'7, and he is 6'6, so he doesn't see it, but it doesn't seem right. Does this sound like a correctly repaired windshield?

I have 2 chips in my Windshield. My insurance company 'repaired' both chips which is just forcing a clear epoxy type stuff into each chip then curing it. I think with a uv light but I'm not positive. You can still see where the chips are. They are smooth but not as smooth as glass previously was. I'm sure from the right angle one can see a prism in it. They last for years, the older one I have is 3 years old the newer one is over a year. freebird will be able to explain better than I did, I'm sure, but I just thought I'd let you know my experience with it.

Yeah, the way they fix chips now is like what hop2 described. It's designed to keep the chip from turning into a crack, not necessarily to make the windshield like new.

You may be able to see the chip still once it's repaired. If it's been repaired you'll see a small column in the center of the repair where it was drilled out. How it looks has nothing to do with the quality of the repair. That's more to do with the type of break it was and how much contamination was in the damage before it was repaired. My husband said that sometimes you CAN still feel it from the outside.
If you want to be sure, just stop into a glass shop (a mom and pop shop if you can) and ask them if they've already been repaired and they should be able to tell you.

If you find that it wasn't actually repaired, or it impairs your driving, you can take it back to Carmax and tell them. I bought my last van from Carmax and they told me to bring it back within 30 days if I found any problems and they would make it right. We took it back for something--don't remember what now--and they fixed it on the spot.

I'll have my DH take it to the glass shop and ask them look at it at. Our local glass shop is a father/son business.
