We are nearly out the door today for our honeymoon and last night I tripped over a shoe and my pinky toe went one way and I went the other. I elevated and iced and am taking Advil. I can walk okay but we are flying to Ireland so that's a long flight. I'm pretty sure they can't do anything other than tape it to another toe which I'm going to do and tell me to ice and elevate. It is a little swollen and bruised but is pointing the proper way. I feel like in a day or so, it'll be fine. Maybe sore to the touch but fine.
Any RP advice of something I should so or take with me? Can I ask for ice on the plane for it? I'm just trying to figure out if there is something I should do that I haven't thought about. I am gong to buy a bottle of Advil before we go too.
I really don't want to put a shoe on it just yet. We have a short flight to NY and then the overnight to Ireland. I'm TSA Pre so I don't have to take my shoes off and we're first class there so we are going to hang in the Sky Club lounge until our flights. I think I can get away with a sandal and not a sneaker.

Yeah, nothing can be done for a broken pinky toe. Just buddy tape it and carry on. I'd wear a sandal or flip flop for traveling and honestly wouldn't even worry about icing it. I've broken a couple of toes (one being a pinky toe) and the doc didn't even recommend ice. Just the taping to the next toe over. Within a couple of weeks, I was able to take the tape off and it was fine. Sorry about your toe but enjoy your honeymoon!!!

OMG, you poor thing! I'm so sorry this had to happen on your way to such a special trip!! That brings back a memory of my very first day of college. My new roommate woke up, headed out for the bathroom and slammed her foot against the metal bed post. Just like you said her pinky toe went one way and she another. She woke me up with her scream, and we both watched in horror as her toe seemed to turn into a little purple grape on the side of her foot. Anyway, even though that was almost 30 years ago, I don't think much has changed, there's not much you can do that you haven't already done. It does sound like you are in the best possible circumstances for your trip, so just keep popping the painkillers and enjoy your Honeymoon! You'll laugh about this someday. PS - please report back, I'm trying to plan a trip to Ireland for October and would love your "Must Sees"

Maybe you want to buy a collapsible cane and take it just in case. Also, one of those medical soft shoes.

Been there done that. It hurts more than you would think. I could only wear crocs for 5 weeks afterwards. And for 3 weeks I could only hobble around.
Crappie timing!

Ooh, a broken pinky toe kept me from wearing regular shoes for weeks. Ouch! So sorry that happened. As far as taping, IMO, unless it's dangling from your foot and not staying in place, there is no need to do that. I didn't tape mine at all.

I've done that twice (each side, because I like to match). As another poster mentioned, it was painful to walk for quite some time, so I'm pretty concerned about all the vacation walking you'll be doing. Please take shoes that will be as comfortable as possible that won't squish your poor little piggy.

I would take a handful of ziploc baggies so you can get ice from a soda fountain in the airport, ask the flight attendant for some, etc. You may also want to take a small hand towel or washcloth to help with condensation and so the ice isn't directly on your foot. You may want a slipper or a croc or something.

I'm sorry. they will have any medical supplies you need in Ireland so figure out what you need to be comfortable on the plane and take it a day at time.
I would wear crocs or something that won't squish your poorly toe and take some soft stretchy comfty socks for the plane. My feet always get cold.

When I rammed my pinky toe into a chair leg, it looked like a left turn signal. I could not get it back in place, so I had to go to the er. The dr. numbed it to put it back in place. Then tape. Hurt like hell for weeks. I hope this doesn't interfere with your honeymoon. Feel better.

Awww sorry about that! That's terrible.
I've broken the same pinkie toe twice. Once really badly, and less so.
Yes, buddy tape it. Ice it. Elevate it. Take an anti-inflammatory pain med.
Have a drink if you can.
The first time (worse time) I broke mine, I couldn't bear even the slightest bit of shoe on it, and used flip flops for a good week or two.
The second time, I was able to wear Crocs. Not fashionable, but gave me a little protection.

Thanks, everyone. I don't have a pair of Crocs do that is out. I have a couple pair of Merrill sandals and a pair of flip flops. I wad going to wear sneakers but opted for the sandals and the flip flops for the plane. I did end up taping the toes together just for some stability and to see if it helped. I need to get dh to walk slower for me. We had a 5 hour layover that has been whittled down to 45 mins. I'm worried about having to run through JFK for our connecting flight.

Would there be any value in talking to the airline about your mobility issue, perhaps they can help with the transfer eg a wheelchair or similar. Nothing to lose by giving them a call especially since you are travelling first class. Have a great time in Ireland.

Yeah I would ask for assistance at the airport..... I feel for you though.. .two days before I got married I fell down the stairs and broke my foot. With enough pain meds to get me through I walked on my day down the aisle. It sucked... but at least we didn't have to worry about the honeymoon as we took that much later... anyways, comfy shoes and how nice you will be able to relax in first class, just think if you were shoved in the middle in coach!!! ugggg that would have been a nightmare!

What lousy timing! I have also broken a toe and the pain is awful. Bring some type of shoe that you can walk in without cramping the toes at all. I also took an anti-inflammatory for a while to get the swelling down in it. It helped. I hope you have a wonderful honeymoon. Be sure to bring us photos and stories when you get back.

We went to the wedding of a friend of ours who was in a car accident a couple days before the wedding. She had to use a cane - which they decorated up to blend in with the wedding attire - and they modified things so that the bride and groom sat during part of the wedding. They made it work.
It's a bummer this happened and may affect your ability to get around and do the walking you might have had planned, but I hope you can still enjoy the trip - and it will make for great stories later!

Tell the airline and if you're already on the plane, the flight attendant that you'll need help getting to your next flight w/a broken toe. They will send a cart to your gate and pick u up. When you land in Ireland I think your first stop needs to be a pharmacist who might sell fracture shoes. You need the hard support and it'll be much comfier if you're wearing a fracture shoe. Also, pick up a cane and take some weight off of your foot. I'm sorry that you broke your toe right before your honeymoon. My sister hobbled down the aisle at my wedding, having broken her toe a couple days beforehand. It sucks. Take, good care and have a fun and romantic honeymoon.

Well our close connection was not an issue since our first leg was delayed and we would have missed our second leg. Delta was not terribly helpful but we were able to get rerouted to Paris and then on to Dublin. So I'm sitting in the airport lounge in Paris where they gave us both a free facial! This honeymoon isn't going how we planned but I have no real complaints! I'm sitting in Paris!

Shame the airline wasn't helpful but hey, a facial sounds different and nice. Once you board the plane it is a short flight to Dublin so you will be there in no time. Your toe will be glad to know you will arrive too late to do this, happened yesterday in Mayo, 20,000 people walking to the top of Croagh Patrick. It's a very rocky path up which some people do in their bare feet! www.rte.ie/news/2016/0731/806048-croagh-patrick-pilgrimage/
