I am redoing my downstairs half bathroom. After tearing down the hideous wallpaper that has been up since I have moved in almost 20 years ago I can paint the room any color I want. There are so many choices how do I begin to pick?
There will be a new white vanity and toilet. The sink is a "marbled" neutral and the fixtures are brushed nickle. I will be putting in a new mirror and new lighting after it is painted; I just need to pick a darn color.

Do you want impact or subtle sophistication? Do you like minimalist looks or more detail/colour? Do you like a particular style - Moroccan, Scandinavian...they lend themselves to certain colours.

My best advice...pick the colour you like...then go 2 shades lighter After repainting 2 rooms several years ago because the colour was too intense I've hit on this new colour selection method and haven't been wrong since. Good luck!

gar The bathroom was a bit county/shabby chic. I want to go more urban sophisticate if that makes any sense.

Well, I'd start with warm vs. cool, and think about if you want some sort of particular look or theme. I like soothing colors, so I tend to skew toward cool colors. I just painted 2 bathrooms in my house with Benjamin Moore Quiet Moments, which is like a sea glass color. I'm putting a photo here, but the color isn't quite true because I'm using my phone. It looks really green in the swatch online, but skews more gray-teal in my particular room. www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/quietmomentsHit up Pinterest, too, for looks! If you're really nervous, buy a small sample container and paint a few (larger) swatches on the wall.

Good luck! I'd give you the OPPOSITE advice! I just painted my whole house and my instinct was to freak out and go light. I'm glad I went with darker shades because the light in our house would have made anything lighter just look washed out and almost white. It really depends on the lighting in your space. SaveSave

Take pictures and swatches to a BM dealer and have the artist pick for you. They have never steered me wrong and pick a color I never looked at and end up loving.
One possibility for your space is BM Calm, a very subtle grey that has ever so slight a taupe to it, so it is not cold. Have it in my bathroom.

I just saw your comment about urban sophisticate. In that case, I'd consider a gray or even a deeper blue. If you're doing the white and neutral marbled finish, you would maybe want to create some contrast with color. Depends on the size of the room, but I love contrast. Would give it an edgier feel. There is actually a Benjamin Moore color called urban sophisticate! Haha! I hate it, but... www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/urbansophisticate

In other parts of my house, I used Revere Pewter, Gray Huskie (aka Ozark Shadows), Nimbus, and Hale Navy.

I don't thing that's urban or sophisticated. Unless I have my terms wrong.

I send the Pinterest suggestion, or Houzz. Try searching the styles you've mentioned and go from there.
Will you be using a shower curtain? If so, perhaps find one you like and base the color from that. You could look online at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for a variety of shower curtains.
Good luck!

Just don't go in the paint store and ask to see "the bathroom colors". My dh had that question asked but for kitchen. He wanted to be snarky and show them the yellow section of the swatch book.
I do agree with going a shade or two darker than you think. Dh (who has 20+ years of experience selling paint) always has to convince me to go darker than I thought. He even went ahead once and got paint a shade darker than we had even agreed upon, and didn't tell me until I had mentioned that I was glad he had suggested going darker.

I would look at the Houzz ap for inspiration. When you see rooms painted colors you like, you can click on the information icon on the bottom right hand corner and the designer who posted the picture will often answer questions about the paint color.
Once I decide on a general color scheme, I head to the Sherwin Williams store and ask for advice. The people who work in those paint stores really know their paint colors and can give you all kinds of advice about the finish, etc. I've gone in several times with one particular color in mind and after discussing it with the professional at the paint store I'll end up getting a shade lighter or darker or maybe a completely different color altogether.
I'm always thinking about the resale value of my house, so I always make sure that the color I choose is something that I like, but still is fairly neutral. I can always let my personality shine w/ my choice of artwork and accessories.

I highly recommend painting swatches on the walls. It will really help you decide, especially if you have no color in mind.
I did a google image search of Urban Sophisticated Design and I come up with Black Grey and White.

What is your color/décor theme in the rest of the house? Do you want this bathroom to coordinate with the rest of the house or are you aiming for something completely different?

My favorite Benjamin Moore color is called nightingale. I consider it the perfect shade of light gray for almost anywhere. And it goes with many other colors.

My method of picking paint: Option one: find something I LOVE that MUST go in that room.. that might be art for the wall, utility pieces for the vanity, shower curtain hooks, shower curtain or towels. Then pick a paint that coordinates with that item I love.
Option two: make a pinterest board and pin rooms that I like the color of. Doesn't matter what the room is (kitchen, bedroom, living room, patio) Just that I really like the color scheme. I don't inspect the image for anything else and I go with my initial reaction on the color. After a few pins I can start to see trends in what I like for colors and combinations.
