We had storms the other day and we're warned of flashed flooding potential. Nothing much came of it. Yesterday, I don't believe there was ever a single alert put out. Yet, 6" of rain fell in under 3 hours and has caused MAJOR devastation/destruction. My daughter has a friend whose parents have a shop in the main street area and the friend is practically every building on that street is destroyed. I've heard of one fatality and hundreds had to be rescued from the flood waters. There are currently more than a dozen missing. More rain is forecasted tonight. Video1

This area has literally been blindsided by this event. Please keep them in your prayers and thoughts.

This is right down the street from me. Every time I have out of town guests I take them to old EC. This is devastating. Prayers for all the residents and business owners.

I'm in shock, I love Ellicott City. Had my old oriental carpets cleaned and bought my gorgeous living room carpet from Main Street Oriental Rugs there. Such lovely people, just heart-broken for them and the entire town. We had some downpours here in Harford County, but obviously nowhere near what EC experienced. I get weather updates on my phone and, in hindsight, was also surprised at how few were broadcast about the severity of the storms and the potential for flooding yesterday.

We had lots of rain yesterday but I'm in a rural area, the water just sinks into the ground or runs into the Chesapeake Bay. Ellicott City is low lying and when the Potomac rises it has no place to go but into the city streets. I was surprised at the amount of damage and how fast the water rose.

2 fatalaties now. Unfortunately this happened at the same place where the train derailment killed 2 teenagers in the summer of 2012. Historic EC is such a tiny little section of town, only a few blocks long, so it's hard to believe there could be so much tragedy in such a small and beautiful place.
Wishing safety and strength to all who are dealing with this event and its' aftermath.

I watched coverage of this on the news this morning. How horrible.
After experiencing our "1,000 year flood" in SC last October, I have a far greater appreciation for the unbelievable devastation that too much rain can create.

My sister lives in Ellicott City. She just couldn't believe how bad it was. They didn't have any damage. I imagine that my nieces' favorite, the fairy shop, was destroyed. Those are all such unique little shops.

I remember when this happened in Detroit not too long ago. It is scary and amazing how quickly it all happens.
My thoughts and prayers are with those affected and their families.

How terrible! It's just unbelievable how quickly the water can rise and cause such devastation.
I have a friend who lost everything in the WV floods in June. If not for the generosity of friends and faith-based groups in the area, she would never be able to get back on her feet. Government help has been almost non-existent and very, very slow. But the community has really pulled together to take care of each other. I pray that Ellicott City can do the same.

My sister lived in Ellicott City from 1985 until 1991. I visited her there four or five times. That town was gorgeous and absolutely unforgettably nice. She sent me notices about the flooding on the same day that it happened, and we texted, in horror, as more and more destruction was revealed.
It's so sad. I really hope the town can rally around and fix those beautiful, historic buildings. So sad.

My daughter's "boyfriend" is from Ellicot City. He told her all about the damage there. He and his family are in India now, but heard from neighbors that their street is fine. So scary for the residents.

The residents were going to be allowed 10 minutes (escorted by National Guard) in their homes to get a single tote box of their stuff out. Along the way two buildings started to move and are in danger of eminent collapse. So for now, residents are no longer allowed to retrieve stuff from their places. I cannot fathom what it must feel like to lose your business (your job and/or career), your home, your car, and all of your worldly possessions in a matter of minutes by something completely beyond anyone's control.
