I had posted earlier in July about going on a trip with DS21 to Wyoming and Colorado and asked for ideas and destinations. Your help was greatly appreciated and made planning the trip easy and enjoyable. Here is our itinerary. If you see any places where we might want to add/delete stops or side trips please let me know. And thank you again for all of the advice.
Days 1-2 Travel from PA to Encampment/Centennial, Wyoming (This is where DS's base hunting camp is located.) Days 3-4 Hike in the Medicine Bow Nat'l Forest. DS spends at least one month here every year and is excited to share his favorite spots with me.
Days 5-6 Travel to Cody and spend time there site-seeing and going to the rodeo, etc. We are planning a top at Thermopolis on the way.
Days 7-10 Yellowstone - Hiking, fishing, and sightseeing. We will spend 2 nights in Gardiner, 1 nite in W. Yellowstone and one nite in the park.
Days 11-13 Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole. We will be staying in a darling little 2 bedroom log cabin near Jackson Hole.
Days 14-15 Return to Encampment via the Wind River Indian Reservation for a day of rest and to buy supplies for DS for hunting season.
Days 16 - 19 Drive to Colorado and visit Estes, Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak and Denver area. We are staying with friends for this part of the trip.
Day 20 - I will fly home from Denver and DS will return to his hunting camp for Elk season. He and his friend are building a new cabin at their site so he will be working on that when not hunting.
I will return home and take the next 3 months to recover both physically and financially!
Thanks for perusing our itinerary and offering up any and all suggestions...

Sounds fun and adventurous! I just drove from Estes to Colorado Springs last Sunday and it was a 2 hour 45 minute trip. I am about 10 minutes south of Garden of the Gods. I know they are closing one of the major highways (34, I think, in October to redo the road). I took 36 and it was a very easy trip

I should add, we have been having a few really good wildfires. Just make sure before you come that your areas aren't affected. We've had some really bad ones in the past few years.

Thta sounds like quite a trip! I can't fathom being away from home for that long but if I could go alone, I would jump at the chance LOL.
I drove over to Estes Park on Thursday of this week and it was such a relaxing day trip. We were up in Cheyenne for their Frontier Days, two nights of back to back concerts and I didn't want to drive back and forth to Denver both days so we spent the night in Fort Collins then treked over to Estes and back to Cheyenne that night. No fires in those areas but I know there have been many. Enjoy your trip and make sure you ride the tram up to the top of the mountain in Estes and feed the ground squirrels, while admiring the views.

Haven't been to the "Daddy of 'em All" in a long time. I think your trip looks fun! It's a lot of miles but there are lots of unique things to do along the way.

Days 16 - 19 Drive to Colorado and visit Estes, Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak and Denver area. We are staying with friends for this part of the trip. Where is your base camp for these days? Driving to Estes from Denver can be a 2+ hour trip (depending which route). If you plan to do any hiking or significant site seeing in Rocky Mountain National Park you really have to be there early, especially during the summer season. We were just there (stayed in Estes) and we got to Bear Lake at 8 am and parking was nearly full already. By the time we left at 11 am, it was crazy busy and wasn't enjoyable to hike trails with so many people on them.

The trip is August 11 to Sept. 1st. We have all reservations except Denver where we will be staying with friends. Our camp is between Centennial and Encampment in Wyoming.

Are you planning on driving on driving to the top of Pike's Peak or do you want to take the cog? If the cog, you might want to make reservations.

Okay this will sound weird, but if you are in Denver and in downtown, you GOTTA go get some doughnuts at Voodoo Doughnuts... They only had two locations in the US (in fact, I just looked the other day and now there are 5 locations and one location in Taipei, Taiwan!! (which is So bizarre to me...lol)...
But honestly their doughnuts are SO good and there is always a line and they are open 24 hours a day!! But worth it for fun.. (They are a bit Rated R so beware...lol)
Grape Ape is my FAVORITE one.. sounds gross but it SO delish!
