Thank you. I've been slowly adding hooks to my collection as I finally found one I really like so I need to order a new hook too.

I'm using that yarn to make my Rose of Avalon. What do you have planned for it? I'm a bit peeved as I find it splits a bit. Maybe I'd get on better with it if I were knitting.

I bought it because so many people raved about it along with the great color choices. I prefer to crochet with yarn that uses 5-6mm hook so I was disappointed that it was so "thin"-not the yarn's fault...I should have researched more before buying 35 skeins!!
So now I'm trying to use it all up, even though I don't love it (but I agree the colors are awesome!). I make baby blankets for local hospitals, so they feel like they're kind of skimpy. One of the blankets I used a double strand and I liked the end result much more.

I ordered quite a bit too, and it is not my favorite yarn either. I doubt I order more. LOVE the colors but I can get that with other yarns. Anyway, I started an afghan with the 4.0 mm hook like suggested but I did not like it at all. I started over using a 3.5 mm hook, and I like it much better. But I too prefer to work with thicker yarn and a larger hook.

See that's disappointing to hear you guys. I was thinking of making a baby blanket with it. I'm having trouble finding colors I need to match the nursery.

Check the colors on Stylecraft Special Aran...it uses 5.0mm hook....that's one that I was thinking of trying next, after I finish up my endless supply of DK

I have to disagree, I really like the Stylecraft Special DK and I don't have any splitting issues...maybe the hooks make a difference I like the Clover 'soft touch' hooks (gold colored ones) and even my cheap Aldi bought yarn didn't split when I used those. I've always used a 4mm hook and I think it looks good with that size, some of the Lilypond pattern gets you to use a 3.5mm hook with the DK and it definitely makes the stitches more dense. Also your natural crochet tension will come into at as well, and I'm on the tight to normal range as far as tension goes so the 4mm hook size works well for me, if you have a loose tension then a smaller size will work better.
Plus I think the weight/thickness of it is just right, but then I'm not a fan of big/chunky style knitting and crochet projects, and I definitely think the more intricate patterns look better in in DK (or less) weight. When I used to knit I never used more than DK (8ply weight) wool so perhaps it's just that I'm so used to it, but I can't imagine using 2 strands of it, that seems like it would be way too bulky to work with comfortably. The largest hook I own is 4.5mmm and that already seemed huge to me when I used it on the boarder of my Frida's flowers.

I'm with Pjaye. I use Stylecraft DK almost exclusively and have never had any problems with it. I tend to use a 4.5 hook.

Mine was already so lose with the 4.0 mm that the 4.5 mm would have fallen apart. LOL! I stitch more loosely though. And with both hooks, the yarn split. I use a Addi hook which I LOVE!!!! I don't have splitting problems with other yarns. And as far as a baby blanket, I have made countless using the Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn. My newest was just received by the new family a couple of weeks ago, and they LOVE it. It matches the nursery perfectly, and they were very pleased. The Hobby Lobby yarn has zillions of colors and stitches up so nicely. Another great baby blanket yarn is Caron Simply Soft. My best friend uses it for all of her baby blankets. I personally find it too soft for my liking but it is really, really nice. They have about 51 colors. Hope some of this helps.

It's not my favourite as I don't think it's very soft but I've never had any issues with it splitting. I just made a wrap with King Cole Smooth DK and that was a nightmare for snagging and splitting but the colours are soooo pretty.
I didn't answer the question, sorry! I use a 4 or 4.5 with it.

I bought some of it and I like it but I like Hobby Lobby I Love this Yarn more. Have you tried it? They have a nice selection of colors but not as many as Stylecraft. I do think it's softer than Stylecraft, too, if that makes a difference to you. If you're not set on using an acrylic yarn, I can make some other recommendations. I've bought quite a bit of yarn this year. I just picked up my hook again after a ten-year hiatus and I wanted to try it all! I didn't try it all but I've tried quite a bit, most of which was bought from Wool Warehouse, my favorite store ever! SaveSave

I went back to wool warehouse and looked and the chunky yarn calls for a 6 mm hook. I can get the colors I need so I think I'm going to go with that. Thank you everybody for weighing in.
