If any of you have renewed a passport lately, how long did it take. I can mail it this week and have about 9 weeks until I leave..... I hate the idea of waiting with a week to go.... But I also hate the idea of spending $60.00 for an expedited service. It will go in the mail Tomorrow.

I renewed mine this spring, got it back in under 4 weeks. I sent it priority mail so that I knew when it was delivered, did not pay for return priority mail, but they did send it that way and it came a lot faster than I thought.
The old passport was returned about 10 days later.

I renewed the kids and mine this spring. We had to drop the kids' documentation off at the passport post office (under 15 rule), and were charged $20 for handling per passport, we did not pay the expediting fees. We got the passports back in one week. I sent mine off by mail and it took just under 2 weeks. While we were living in Canada we got Nexus for express border crossing so that might have helped speed the process. Fingerprints are not needed for a passport, but they are needed for Nexus.
With 9 weeks, if it isn't your first passport, I would just send if off by mail. If it is your first passport, go to a passport acceptance facility, pay the $20 so you can be sure all your i's are dotted and t's are crossed.
ETA: I think you also missed the summer rush.

DS just got his first passport and it took less than 3 weeks. The lady who processed it pointed out a phone number on the form that you can call to get the status. If the status leaves you feeling uneasy about getting it on time, you can expedite it over the phone (paying the fee, of course).

Someone told me we now we have to be fingerprinted. Is that so? Not when you do it by mail. And I just picked up the application and read instructions on line. No mention of fingerprints. I do have to get a new picture.

I don't know about a straight up renewal, but I had to do the process after my passport was stolen in Costa Rica and the longest part of the whole process was getting an appointment with the post office to drop the info off with them!
