I'm taking two weeks off to watch! I'm having major dental surgery tomorrow, so will be down for a couple days. Must say, I think I have excellant timing! So I'm enjoying the start of women's Olympic soccer today while I scrub my house down & catch up on laundry.

This is actually the first Olympics that worries me. All the deadly bacteria in the water, the terrible conditions in the Olympic Village, the political unrest in Rio. The Debbie Downer in me is just nervous. Based on how lousy a job Brazil has done in getting ready for the events and the horrific condition of the water, etc. I wonder just how well they will handle security. I hope everyone comes home safely. And this zikka virus thing, can you trust them that it's 'not a threat". I hate to be a DD too but dang. That and the dead bodies and feces in the water. <shudder> that's all I can think of, unfortunately. I am VERY worried about the security there. ISIS has called for attacks, they talked about it on the news, and supposedly the "chatter" is up. Also the zika virus and just the train wreck of them getting ready for the Olympics in Brazil. This reflects how I feel as well. I worry that this venue is just ripe for tragedy. I'm feeling the same way, but not really from my Debbie downer side but the astrological one. The reports don't look good during this time for such an event. But I heard it could go either way. Contestants could get injured or they could break all-time records. I'm hoping for the best with all involved.

How in the world are tacos Brazilian? IDK!! I'm searching here people!! help me!! ha. We go to our favorite Brazilian restaurant for the BBQ platter. It is served with a seasoned manioc/yucca flour called farofa that is really good. You can also get a traditional Brazilian cheese bread mix from Amazon and make Pao de Queijo. If you can find yucca in your area you can make yucca fries and empanadas are also a great choice for an appetizer. Grilled pineapple is a great dessert. I'm not big on beans, but you can search for a Feijoada recipe (traditional Brazilian black bean stew). ETA To answer the OP, I'm always excited to see the Open Ceremonies. LOVE the parade of athletes . Save

Fine. Since 9-11-2001.but thanks for ignoring the meaning of my post. I'm not ignoring your post Heidi, there isn't anything to discuss. Terrorism is terrorism and we've had the threat and experienced the horror of terrorist over herein the UK and in other parts of Europe ( there are other terrorist apart from ISIS) for far longer than the last 15 years. But the discussion about terrorist in general is for another thread not this one. I'm not the one who brought it up as though it was a silly concern. And I think that a thread about the Olympics is precisely the place to discuss the Olympics. I said I was not excited and why. The concerns of safety, health aND security are valid, and frankly very alarming. And tossing out that the US was worried (in a way that made it sound ridiculous that we were) for the 2012 Olympics is bizarre and irrelevant.and more importantly it wasn't silly.

Over the years, I have grown disenchanted with the Olympics as I've learned about the politics, doping, backroom deals, damage to athletes in the medal race that reflects political divisions, etc. To say that I think it's overhyped is an understatement.

Thanks Belle! I'm not sure on the bean stew. We aren't much for beans, and it takes like 3 hours, plus soaking the beans. I am pretty sure we are doing beef kabobs..ala brazalian steak...and something else. Looking for something with mango also.

If you have a Trader Joe's nearby, they have a ton of mango products right now.

Add me to the excited list! I'm really looking forward to the equestrian events, gymnastics and swimming. And we are nearly celebrating in this house because we learned today that they will finally be putting softball back in for the 2020 Olympics. I have one very happy shortstop in my house tonight.

ITA! Growing up, I loved the Olympics. I mean, I would get up in the middle of the night to watch volleyball (my sport). But the more I learn the less I watch. It disgusts me that this corrupt organization continues to operate the way it does. The bloom was starting to come off the rose for me when they let professional athletes compete. It makes me sad because I used to really love getting the schedule of events and highlighting all the ones I wanted to see.
DH is home, medically retired, and he's never been one to watch but the last time they rolled around he was so into it. Watching everything. I found it funny.

Are there open-water swim events? I only remember ones in pools. That's what the article outlined.

I, myself, thought that Olympics used pools (hence the term Olympic sized swimming pools), and was shocked when I read that they are swimming in what is essentially a cesspool.

I normally wouldn't have said anything, but wanted you to know I was surprised! Now I'm going to look for the open water events. If my stomach can handle it --- ick!!!

I was on swim team for 13 years (kindergarten to senior year) and I'm a "swammer". I love watching the swimming and also the diving. The Olympics is about the only time that swimming is on.
We're also a track family, so we are really looking forward to all the track and field events and the distance running.
