Can't wait for them to start. I'm a sports fanatic anyway, so to get all these sports packed into 2 weeks, love it!
Seems every 2 years there are problems with this & that, but man, I am so hoping the Rio Olympics surprise the critics & go off without a hitch. I fear that's really wishful thinking. For the athletes sake, I hope it's not as bad as reports I've seen. Looking forward to soccer, swimming, gymnastics & track & field. Oh, who am I kidding, I'll be watching whatever I can!

Yes, and no. I actually like the winter ones better, but like a lot of the swimming things, and gymnastics. I'm more worried, this time, how it will turn out, especially with all of the teams getting caught/banned for doping, and the conditions of the area.

more than you can imagine. DH and I are heading to Brazil on Saturday! Brian- Oh my gosh, how exciting!! Please, please, please post pictures!! What do you plan on attending. I'm just about jumping up & down for you! I had the absolute pleasure of going to the Nagano Winter Olympics. But I lived in Japan at the time, so it doesn't feel the same.

well, at the very least I'm excited about Opening Ceremonies. i love the pageantry of it. the athletes are all excited and hopeful. i especially like seeing the smaller countries with just a couple of athletes who probably don't have a chance of winning but are just happy to be there.

I adore the Olympics. I don't like watching sports in general, but if it's the Olympics I'm all over it.

Very excited! Haven't camped out in front of the tv since March Madness ended.
Just hoping that the media will cover more than swimming and gymnastics - I love them both, but the coverage tends to be very biased toward those two sports.

This is actually the first Olympics that worries me. All the deadly bacteria in the water, the terrible conditions in the Olympic Village, the political unrest in Rio. It's just so bizarre.
I hope I'm wrong and the Games are a smashing success. The Debbie Downer in me is just nervous.

I prefer the winter Olympics too, but I love the idea of the nations coming together in peace. I am very, very worried about these though. Based on how lousy a job Brazil has done in getting ready for the events and the horrific condition of the water, etc. I wonder just how well they will handle security. I hope everyone comes home safely.

I hate to be a DD too but dang. That and the dead bodies and feces in the water. <shudder> that's all I can think of, unfortunately. At least for now. I think once the gymnastics meets start I'll forget. I pray the games go well and no threats or harm come to anyone.

US!! we are looking fwd to them. On the opening ceremonies night we make a dinner representing that country. I am still thinking for brazil? does taco's seem wrong?? we don't like spicy.
I am VERY worried about the security there. ISIS has called for attacks, they talked about it on the news, and supposedly the "chatter" is up. Also the zika virus and just the train wreck of them getting ready for the Olympics in Brazil.

I'm torn. The human rights issues in Rio make me sick. And the fact that the global community only cares because elite athletes who choose to be there might get sick is infuriating.
I feel frustrated that the Olympics is so corrupt. That governments don't care about anything but appeareances, that people are literally dying there, and all anyone can talk about is that the conditions for the althetes are deplorable while seemingly ignoring that people live there every single day. And I have to wonder with the allegations of cheating, the obvious health threats, and the issues of abject poverty in the city, why aren't we boycotting them. Why aren't all countries doing that?
Why do sports and the dreams of people who play sports matter more than the other people?
I love gymnastics. But I cannot in good conscience tune in this time.
Also, who said they were protected from zika? Other than the fact that it is not prime mosquito season there right now...

I have to admit that I am considerably less interested this year than in previous years. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's all the negative press that I've been reading/hearing. The Australian athletes had to be moved out of their rooms due to all kinds of health and safety issues. There are stories of people being robbed - athletes were robbed during a fire evacuation, a Paralympian was robbed at gunpoint, a commentator was also robbed etc etc.

I enjoy watching small things like the 100 metres sprints, hurdles, gymnastics, swimming. Nothing that takes too long to complete. The 10,000 metres kills me to watch. I guess if I were ironing it would be good to watch. Maybe if I get motivated I will clean the scrap room and have the games on. We now have a huge screen TV in the games room/scrap room and no love seat blocking it. I could spend 2 weeks cleaning it out down there and enjoy some Olympic time. I love the opening ceremonies. The closing is awesome as well!

I can't wait.... Missy Franklin fan and she is from our hometown Denver!!! (We actually ran into right after the last Olympics at BB&B but I chicken out and didn't say anything.. I hate to bother 'celebrities'.. OMG she is SO tall (and I am tall).. I scooted around the store and got close to her without being obvious... She was so cute.. shopping with her school friends and buying makeup and just having fun.. I just adore her... ANYWAYS.. so:
swimming, gymnastics and beach volleyball are my favorites...

All went well and they were classed as one of the best games ever......by the athletes no less and everyone went home safe and sound. back to the OP...yes I am looking forward to them, I won't be glued to the TV but will watch quite a chunk of them as time allows.I'll most certainly be watching the opening ceremony. Being Rio I would imagine ( and hoping) it will be very colourful and upbeat. I'll give Rio the benefit of the doubt as far as will it be ready in time and the security, until it's proved otherwise.
