I have only to look in my own mouth to know how well flossing actually works.
FWIW, Oral-B Glide dental floss made a considerable difference for me. I can't recommend it enough!

Considering how much crap I unearth at times, I'm going with better than not flossing.

I am so addicted to flossing that I have flossers in my car, purse, and desk. I will not ever stop flossing.

Considering how much crap I unearth at times, I'm going with better than not flossing. Haha, same here!!! I am so addicted to flossing that I have flossers in my car, purse, and desk. I will not ever stop flossing. Again, same here. The other day I was caught short without any floss in my handbag. I was so desperate to floss my teeth (I could feel something there and it was driving me insane!) that I pulled out a couple of strands of hair and used that! I'm so embarrassed to admit that on a public forum but that's how desperate I was.

I have noticed a HUGE difference in my gums since I started flossing regularly. I'm going to disagree with this.

There is little evidence to support it. That doesn't mean there is no value, just that in terms of science there really is no proof that it's beneficial. But since there is a lot of anecdotal evidence to the benefit and it's low cost low risk, it makes sense to continue the recommendation unless it is studied and shows no benefit or that it shows harm.
But it's facinating to me how often we just believe something and we just don't actually know!

I don't believe it either. My checkups improved dramatically after I started flossing regularly.

Yea, I heard this on the radio this morning.
This quote from the linked article:
"The government has been urging you to floss since 1979. AP recently asked several government agencies for the science behind their flossing recommendations. And ... well, there wasn't really much there."
I don't think our government is the best, most reliable source of information. I'm going to keep flossing.

I'd use hair if I had to.

Helpful or not, I'm going to keep at it. I can't stand the feeling of having something stuck between my teeth!
I carry those little Plackers in my purse so I have one wherever I go just in case I need it.

Definitely a difference for me. I know there's a difference between when I'm flossing regularly and when I'm not.

My dentist told me 15 or so years ago that for most people, including me, that flossing was unnecessary. And that many who do floss have poor technique that can do more harm than good.

Now I don't have to feel guilty! I'm not a regular flosser and my teeth aren't any worse for the wear. I did get one of those air flossers and use it a couple of times a week. What made the biggest difference in my tooth and gum health was getting a good electric toothbrush. That I won't give up.

I never floss. Actually, only have flossed maybe a dozen times in my life. Yet, my checkups generally are good. In my youth had to go to military dentists overseas and the damage they did is the cause of the fillings, root canals and crowns I have. Have not had a cavity in years.

I have 5 bags of flossers (3 green 2 white) and they are everywhere. Beside table, both bathroom drawers and the vanity underneath. I am not a too dedicated flosser but I do floss. I hate it when food gets caught between my teeth and it causes them to move. That hurts so I would say I floss 4x week.

Plenty of government agencies are leading research facilities and can and should be relied upon and respected for their studies. Think the CDC, Natonal Institute of Safety and Health, etc.

I was coming in to post almost this exact same thing, except for the air flosser. The Sonicare made a huge difference for me. The last several years, I go in for my 6-month cleaning. Doctor says, "Have you been flossing?" I want to say, "You tell me." but instead I say, "Not as much as you'd like me to." Then after he's all done, "OK, everything looks great and there are no cavities." Flossing-schmossing.

Hooray! Flossing is literally my least favorite hygiene activity ever. I almost never do it. I cannot wait to ask my dentist friend what he thinks of this. I'm pretty sure I heard his head explode from across town today!

I posted this on my dentist's website.... cause, one we are 'friends' outside the dentist world... yeah she ripped me a new one (jokingly) I actually don't floss a lot because literally it makes me gag.. I have to have the water running on full blast to even attempt it.. I do better with the kind with the handle.... and she knows it... and she beats me up once every six months. I LOVE my dentist and hygienist..we are all friends outside of the dental world... even when my insurance changes time to time.. I'll pay the difference to stay with her....

Pretty sure dental heads exploded all over the US today..

I have stopped at a store for only floss when I didn't have any because Apple peel was stuck. I have given floss out more times than I can count so I know I am not the only one that gets desperate to get the object out.

I don't know where they got their info from. I can tell a real difference when I floss, especially if I use the Glide ribbon floss.
