DH turns 50 in February. I already have plans in the works for a family/friend party at a small local Legion hall, with one of our favourite local bands playing. But I'd really like to surprise him with a small trip for the two of us. I know where I'd go in a heartbeat, but this is about him, so no Disney . It's February, so while I'm not opposed to a road trip, getting out of Ontario in February could be a pain in the ass with snow. Anywhere I've looked at flying south (Carribean, Mexico) we are looking at a larger chunk of money because, well, it's February. So budget is a bit of a limitation for a southern trip - although I know he'd like it. New Orleans was on my radar, but February seems a tad too close to Mardi Gras season, although his birthday is the 18th and I'd plan it for the week after his party which is the 4th. Vegas isn't something either of us have a desire to do. Any suggestions? Secret, inexpensive Carribean spots I've not looked into? I'd like to stay around $1000 each, including flights, if at all possible - cake money will be funding this venture! ****Bit of an update********** I emailed my brother from my work email (so DH doesn't see it) and asked if him and his gal want to come along. He sent back "call me" right away. He said "move it to the end of February, and we're in. We are already working on plans to go to her favourite resort, all inclusive, around the $1000 mark" I'm starting to feel this was meant to happen!

Key West? I thought the vibe was much like New Orleans, and the weather would be similar to the Caribbean. I don't know that airfare would be any cheaper, though.

Have you considered Texas? It's beautiful here in February. I don't know what you all enjoy, but we do have some nice beaches along the southern coastline. Port Aransas is lovely. It won't be tropical or swimming weather in February, but it will be spring-like. Personally I would travel around the hill country, spend a few days in Austin, go to Fredericksburg, visit some wineries, maybe go to San Antonio, eat barbecue, dance in the Gruene dance hall ...all in 70 degree weather.
Otherwise, what about the Florida Keys? You get that Caribbean vibe without leaving the country.

I thought of the Keys - but once at the airport, we'd have to rent a car to get to the Keys I think. So I'm thinking I'd be saving no money that way!
But the Keys is still leaving the country for us - we're in Canada, so anywhere warm/fun is leaving the country!

We decided on Puerto Rico for Christmas. Our airfare Christmas week was just under $500 a person and we found an air bnb for about $75 a night. We are staying in Isla Verde near the beach.

What about Charleston SC or Savannah GA? Both would be much warmer than Canada and some of the same vibe as New Orleans.

You'll have to change planes in Miami and get on a smaller plane, but I've done it. And once you're in Key West, you can bike/walk pretty much anywhere. I love Key West! But, the beaches there are not amazing. You can take a ferry to Dry Tortuga where there's a Civil War era fort and snorkel/beach there, and that's super fun. The Key West vibe is great! SaveSave

Cuba. Air Canada Vacations has some great deals if you book before August 31st. All Inclusive, my favorite is Blau Costa Verde "plus" in Holguin. The food is good, freshly cooked in front of you & is safe. Under $1,000.00 each, maybe less.

They're adding some flights now, but there are still restrictions for Americans on why you can travel there. I know there are ways around it, but I'm such a little rule follower. SaveSave

I was also going to suggest Savannah or perhaps San Fransisco, San Diego or Las Vegas.

There are a lot of cities in South Florida that have airports and would be warm enough in Feb. I like to hang out in the Hollywood/Ft. Lauderdale area myself. Hollywood has the old beach town vibe, but you can stay in an apartment unit right on the beach or in a resort like The Diplomat (Westin) or Margaritaville, which is brand new there.

Look at the Turk and Caicos club med it's all inclusive and adults only we went in May the price was reasonable and we had a wonderful time .
