I have to agree with you ...I think it is a good topic to broach. Honestly I have stopped watching/listening to much of the media as they all pretty much disgust me (on all sides). I'll have to look into some of those!

Hey, thanks for finding and sharing this list. I started a thread a while back looking for these kinds of sites. I had already found a few on the list, but I see some new (to me) names/sites that I'd like to check out.

Why I think it is generally a good idea, I don't see it taking off here.

I really appreciate the list!! I've been looking for some more "trusted" news sites. This is a great list to start with!! Even if it doesn't "take off" here, you've helped me out quite a bit. Thanks!!

Personally, I wish they would just explain their bias, so we know.
I don't listen or watch any news. I get on mine from print media, which I think is easier to check out for accuracy.

Thanks for posting the link! I already read Christian Science Monitor and have the BBC on my twitter feed, so it's nice to know they are "supposed" to be unbiased.

You might try looking into this site: AllSides.com (from the list in OP)They literally offer "Left", "Center", and "Right" articles on every topic, side by side.

I like hearing all sides so I don't mind bias as long as it is transparent. What pisses me off is news sources that lie.

I don't think you can class any of the British ones totally independent news sites. All three have a tendency of being on the left even the BBC has been accused of giving more air time to the left and the Guardian is most definitely a left leaning newspaper.
I don't think any country has a totally independent media outlet.

I don't think any country has a totally independent media outlet. I agree with you, however, the main criteria for this particular independent list is that they purport they "do not accept government, political or corporate funding and that their missions are to seek the truth and provide real news versus the entertainment mass media outlets spew to maintain viewer ratings." Unlike media/news from the US all of which comes from 6 Corporate owners. But Soapboxie.com further states that "this does not eliminate bias. At the end of the day it is human beings, with all their shortcomings, creating the final product. So it is up to every reader/listener to question their news and its sources. Being aware that the mainstream media is mostly propaganda is a good starting point. The difficult part is finding the truth."

I would love to learn more about these sites and to find out which are most balanced. I am idealistic enough to believe that there have to be some news media who offer such a view, but so far I haven't found them.
This independent will be following this thread with interest, and thanks for starting it.

This is why it's so weird to see those that get so offended/shocked/in disbelief that anyone would suggest that Snopes might lean a bit to the Left on much of their findings and what they CHOOSE to highlight/debunk and what not to.

Bias is hard to eliminate, but I think CNN and FOX both sensationalize news instead of just reporting on it. I really enjoyed Al-Jazeera American and was heartbroken when they closed. I am a left-leaning liberal that reads BBC, NPR, and I also use the Microsoft Windows News App that my husband installed on my computer lol.
Left or Right leaning, people tend to listen/read news that go along with their personal bias. When people post here with links to a news site that support their version of the truth, the other side is going to scoff. Neither side is completely wrong. And both sides make their own rationalizations.

Al-Jazerra claims they do not accept government, political or corporate funding. But after reading Wiki, I'm not so sure about that. It is, after all owned by the government of Qatar, much different from say openDemocracy.com (a non-profit) which was founded by Anthony Barnett, a British writer and a campaigner for democracy. Guess I'm gonna have to remove Al-Jazerra from my list.

I would love to know if there are truly unbiased news sources so I was interested in your list and the discussion in this thread. As for Al-Jazeera not taking any government monies, I think that the different divisions might be run a little differently. I thought Al-Jazeera American was fairly independent. I, personally, just like to be aware of bias when I'm reading or watching news.

Every news source has their own bias, their own slant, their own spin, their own agenda... every one of them. I don't think you can get around it. People believe what they want to believe.
