Beautiful movie. Worth it for the art alone. But the story is very good too. Ages 9 and up.

We saw it, too, and really loved it. Such beautiful animation!

We loved it! We saw it at a filmfestival, so we saw it the same day we saw Findung Dory. Kubo was far more interesting and beautiful in our opinion.

Looking forward to seeing it. Laika, the animation studio, is based in our town

We're going tonight. DD is excited to see the artwork and heard it got great reviews (but low attendance, probably because school's starting). She wants to support the artists by attending the movie.

DS and I saw it on Sunday. Loved it! When I was 16 I spent the summer in Japan and was able to take part in the Bon Odori festival and this movie brought back some great memories of that time.

My little grandson saw the previews for this when we saw Finding Dory. He is so excited to see this one, he talks about it all the time. He's 4, almost 5. elaine, why do you think ages 9 and up? Are there scary parts?

Are there scary parts? Yes, there are a number of scary parts - there are two witches that are chasing Kubo, for example, trying to literally steal his eye. The whole movie is a quest and there are a number of fight scenes with Kubo and various supernatural characters. You will know him best, but I think parts could be frightening. Some parts of the story might also be beyond his understanding. If I were you, I'd see it first and make the judgement yourself.

Are there scary parts? Has he seen any of Laika's previous movies? Coraline, Box Trolls, Paranorman? This movie stays true to its Japanese storyline with magic, witchcraft, death, tragedy and epic, triumphant love. This seems to be the common theme in Laika's movies with a main character that goes against the stereotypical hero image. It has some very dark, perilous moments mixed in with some beautiful storytelling. I highly recommend it but my kids are 16/14 and would not have been able to watch it at your grandson's age.

He has seen Box Trolls. We watched it together at home. It didn't keep his interest very long, but that has been a while ago. I think I'll wait for it to come to xfinity, rent it & watch it without him, then make the decision to either let him watch or not. At 4 years, the trailer looked exciting to him, but at 4 years he quickly moves on to other interests , like his birthday coming up in October, he loves to talk about his party he's having! It's fun to talk to this little guy & his excitement for just about anything! I'm loving this age as his grandma! So different with grandchildren

So different with grandchildren You could check out Kung Fu Panda 3 (very action adventure oriented) or Angry Birds. Both are available to rent and would probably hold his attention for 1/2 hour! Lol Enjoy your grandson, they grow up way too fast! I miss my boys when they were at that age.

I really liked it as well. My 5.5 y.o. DS did fine with it. I was a bit worried, but he was OK. I showed him the trailer before we went. DD (age 8) liked it as well. The sisters are super creepy though!
I did not like The Box Trolls or Coraline - I did not realize it was the same animation studio!

My goodness! We just got back from the movie. DD1 who just got her MFA in Sequential Art wanted DH and I to go with her, and I'm so glad we did. The artwork was wonderful, and DD was amazed at the stop-motion animation. There were only about 2 dozen of us there (only a couple of kids). I loved the humor in it- we all laughed loudly at the funny parts. I loved that little old lady in the village, too! Possible spoilers (probably not, but just in case)---- Those sisters were creepy! DH and I both noticed that the mother's scar was on a different side than the monkey's scar was. DH's theory is that the monkey was a mirror image of the mother, in a way. When the village was destroyed, it reminded me of the Italian towns that were decimated in today's earthquake.
