My cousin waited and was diagnosed with cancer 14 and was given a year to live.
He made it twelve days and passed on 8/22
I scheduled the colonoscopy I've been putting off for a few weeks this morning.
You should do the same. He was 46.

Sorry for your loss. Colon cancer runs in my family & have been doing the colonoscopies for many years, starting at age 45.

See above and take steph's advice. Colonoscopy prep isn't fun, but it can save your life and is so well worth it. I'm very sorry about your cousin. May his memory be for a blessing.

I'm very sorry for your loss sweetie. (((Hugs)))
Good for you for making that appointment! My father died from colon and stomach cancer a couple of years ago. I kept putting off a colonoscopy until earlier this year. At age 42 I had 9 polyps, several large. Fortunately, all were benign but it really hit home the possibilities. I know what I will be doing every March!

I'm sorry for your loss. It's so important to get those things done. I had my colonoscopy is Oct and it came back with polyp that was pre-cancerous. I have no family history and thought about skipping it.

I'm so sorry for your loss - so young! My dad died from colon cancer at 63 - he never knew the diagnosis - he passed before the biopsy results came back My health insurance nurse (care manager) called me and nagged me earlier this month to make appt's (physical, mammogram, dentist, and eye) - first two are done, eye on Sat. and dentist next month. Of course the physical spawned three more appointments - one for a colonoscopy, one for an ultrasound to f/u on my mammogram, and one to review lab results and re-evaluate my treatment plan.

That's so sad. My mom is a colon cancer survivor of two years...she's 79 and it was caught during a routine colonoscopy. (had NO symptoms).
I am so sorry Steph. Did he ignore symptoms??

It's important to know if you have a family history of colon cancer. The recommended age is 50. I had a friend die from it in his 30's. ETA: If you are at an increased or high risk of colorectal cancer, you might need to start colorectal cancer screening before age 50 and/or be screened more often. The following conditions make your risk higher than average: A personal history of colorectal cancer or adenomatous polyps A personal history of inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease) A strong family history of colorectal cancer or polyps (see Colorectal cancer risk factors) A known family history of a hereditary colorectal cancer syndrome such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or Lynch syndrome (hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer or HNPCC) www.cancer.org/cancer/colonandrectumcancer/moreinformation/colonandrectumcancerearlydetection/colorectal-cancer-early-detection-acs-recommendations

I'm not sure how intense his symptoms were, he just felt 'off' he said the last time I talked to him but we didn't really talk about health much, there was music and our puppies shenanigans to talk about.
Thank you for your condolences. Were shocked and sad, but grateful for the time we had and hopeful that his story will encourage someone to stop ignoring signs and symptoms.

Yes and yes. I always say, you know your own body. If something feels off, get it checked out. Even if you are not sure what it is, where it is.
I did like your post, but that was for your recommendation to get checked out. Not for your loss.
Prayers to your family.

yup. especially for women where we have a tendency to put off going to the doctor because we are too busy taking care of others. my doctor once said "you have to take care of yourself first if you expect to take care of others".

Hugs and so very sorry for your loss. I have a friend that is going through major medical stuff with both her DH and herself. So worried about DH, that she isn't taking care of herself, until a counselor reminded her of the "talk" we hear on a plane. In the event of an emergency, put the oxygen on yourself first, then help, your child. As wives, mothers, caregivers we need to remember this. Schedule that colonoscopy, that mammography , that PAP and any other age appropriate test. Hugs.

Steph, that is horrible, I am very sorry for your loss....but I had mine a month ago and the doctors and nurses were very happy to hear that I decided to go that route rather than the swabs.

Steph- so sorry about your cousin- you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. The prep is not fun but it is one day that can extend a life--- so worth doing! I have it done very 5 years-- I forget about the prep the day after it is done; our minds are great protectors!
