Mom had her knee replacement surgery on June 16. She came home 4 days later. I took her in for her follow-up appointment yesterday and they removed the 32 staples in her knee.
They also diagnosed her with the beginnings of a bladder infection after she told them she was having some symptoms. When we got home my sister-in-law asked if they were culturing her specimen. We didn't ask for that buy should have after sil reminded me of the bad UTI she had a few months ago. Mom should have spoke up but did not for some reason.
Last night she started shivering and feeling really bad. Oddly enough, she did not have a fever but exhibited all signs of one. Her leg felt fine but she was acting the same way she did a few months ago when she had the really bad UTI. This morning my sil contacted the gynecologist that she used to work for that treated Mom for the UTI a few months ago. He called in different meds based on her last culture. She is doing better this morning. He really doesn't want me to have to take her to the ER due to the increased risk of picking up another infection that could be bad for her knee. It has been a scary 12 hours.
I am trying to find a new family doctor to oversee her care. She has been seeing a person an hour away for years and this person has become so busy that he is no longer able to fill her needs. It can take weeks to get in to see him. She needs someone who can oversee her entire medical history and someone who is local.
I am supposed to go home tomorrow. I hope I can still do so. I am horribly homesick and have issues of my own that I need to deal with at home. I have been here for 2 weeks. Please pray that she continues to do well so that I can go home.

Prayers indeed. UTIs are so pernicious, so glad you and your SIL are on top of it.

I'm sorry things have gotten so complicated, I'm sure you are more than ready to get back home. Prayers that your mom will heal up quickly and that you can find her a better doctor.

Prayers and positive thoughts for your mom's healing, finding the right doctor to oversee her care, and for you to get what you need as well. Don't forget to take care of you, because you're important too!

You really have to watch UTIs in older/elderly people. It can really throw them for a loop.
I hope you get to go home soon and that she is doing better.

Hope your mum gets over the UTI quick (they can do nasty things & are so scary to see, esp. in a older person) & you get to go home. Well done for all you've done over the last couple of weeks.

The likelihood of her getting any sort of infection by going in to the ER is very small. Her incision is healed/closed with the staples out. If you need to get help you should have no worries going in. UTIs are nasty in the elderly though, so glad you guys are taking care of it.

I feel for you it must be hard being away from your family whilst dealing with the ill health of your mom. I hope she gets the infection under control.

I feel guilty because I have snapped at her a few times lately. I can't get her to eat the way she needs to for healing purposes. Protein is very important right now and getting her to eat it is like pulling teeth. I even offered to get her some Ensure but she doesn't want it. She is only 68 but is acting like my grandmother used to in her 80s. I reminded Mom how frustrated she got with her own Mom at times when taking care of her.
Heck, I know how crappy a UTI can make you feel. With my bladder issues I am the poster child for UTIs. My aunts, uncles, brother and sil are going to step up to the plate for the next couple of weeks. I have some appointments of my own that I had to put off due to her surgery that I have to go home for. I feel bad about leaving, but I got her through the worst part and the others will just have to help for now.
Thanks so much for all of your encouragement and prayers through all of this.

Donna, it sounds like you've done a really good job with your mom and it's good that the rest of the family is ready to step up to the plate. I hope you go home and take care of yourself for a bit, it's not like you won't still be involved with your mom.

Oh Donna...I have been thinking of you and your mom and was going yo give it til mid week before I reached out to see if you went home and see how she was doing! I hope she gets relief from the medication and gets over the UTI so she can concentrate on her knee! For you, I hope you went home today and can take care of yourself!
They have ramped up my therapy and I am in some pain again. Kind of frustrating when I felt I was doing so well and now I feel like I have taken a step backwards! In a couple of months, you and I will touch base and it will be like your mom and I didn't have knee replacements! Everything will be back to normal...that is my hope for us!

... but I got her through the worst part and the others will just have to help for now. ... She is only 68 but is acting like my grandmother used to in her 80s. I reminded Mom how frustrated she got with her own Mom at times when taking care of her. Keep repeating that first phrase to yourself to keep that pesky guilt at bay. You have helped her a lot and you need to take care of yourself too. My mother is a now-retired nurse -- the worst kind of patient! She had back surgery a number of years ago and it was a stressful ordeal getting her back on her feet. The second sentence mirrors my own experience, although my mom is now in her mid-70s. I can remember her saying "don't let me do that when I get older" and I'll be darned if she isn't repeating many of those behaviors that frustrated her with her own mom. Hang in there, don't beat yourself up and let others help. (All easier said than done, I know.)

I did make it to my own home! It is so good to be home. My poor husband has been alone for 2 weeks and he may be an introvert, but that was a bit much even for him.
My brother called today all frustrated with Mom. She is still not eating well and this is causing issues with her meds. I can remember her rants about my grandmother acting the exact same way. I even reminded her of the situation a couple of days ago.
Thanks for your encouragement and prayers.
