Interesting. Are there no school buses in England? (I'm assuming that's where "Yorkshire" is...) If not, how do kids get to school?

It is way less likely that they are driven. ETA: on a sort of related note. I had a friend who used to export school busses to the UK and import Red Double Decker busses to the US!

Count yourself extremely lucky. The return of buses in the morning has added 20 minutes or more to my commute. Not that I complained when it was MY kids on the bus, mind you...

Was it full of school kids and a bus driver who took a left when s/he should have turned right?

Hey Annie...
I was in Sheffield this summer and loved it...visited Manchester, Derbyshire, and was in Sheffield as well around that area.
Your school buses are much nicer than ours. When I used to teach in Texas, we called them the "Old Yellow Dogs." Also, I used your public transit system quite a bit in England, and I have to say, I really liked it for the most part.

That would have been lovely. I wish I were independently wealthy and could spend more time in your wonderful country. I loved the Peak District, and went to Chatsworth, which was great.

Around here they are a dime a dozen.
I like the look of your public transportation. It looks nicer than the ones around here.

I drive one of my children to school every day. I'm one of many at our school. It's the same at a lot of other schools in the district. The older one takes the school bus ( different schools ) that is very similar to the anniebygaslight photo ( not the yellow bus one the other image)but in a different colour.

Noooooo Chatsworth would have been a great meet up for both Annie and myself as it is central to us both. Glad you enjoyed your trip though. My kids have a public service bus that extends its route once in the morning and once in the afternoon for the school run so if they miss it they are a bit stranded! My middle now goes to college and takes the train.

What a bummer, I wish I could've met up with y'all! Your area is absolutely lovely, and I enjoyed seeing it so much. Let me see if I can find a picture I took of the countryside in Derbyshire.

I am sure it is increasing but in my experience working at schools in England, Cayman and the US. There are significantly fewer kids driven to school in England. At my daughters current school probably 85% of the students are driven... walking is not an option as there is little housing nearby.. but very few take public transportation, or even ride the school bus.

Walking isn't an option in the UK either when you're nearest school is 2 to 3 miles away along a country road with no public transport and no school bus is provided because it's under 3 miles.....it's then on the parent to transport their child to school. Even if there was direct public transport no one here would sent their young child on public transport on their own. I'm don't know how long it is since you've lived in the UK but I was relating to what, in my experience, it's like living here now. I can virtually guarantee that the traffic in most towns and cities halves in volume during the school breaks. More so that parents now have an open choice as to which school their child can apply to.
