I had my annual physical today, and it went great thankfully. She still approves all of the supplements I take but added Calcium (1,200 mg a day). I ran into Walgreen's and the Caltrate Gummy Bites were calling me. Man do they taste GOOD!! They are addictive. BUT I have to take 4 a day and still don't get the 1,200 mg a day (only 1,000 mg), and it ends up being 140 calories! I would love to continue taking these but . . . So, share with me your most effective Calcium supplement you take and like. Thanks!

I don't take calcium but use vitamin code vitamins because they're the best brand. They are pricey but they don't need to be taken with food and hAve extra nutrients in them. I read an article that a lot of vitamins are already stale in the shelf.

I don't really supplement. I drink fortified coconut milk for most of my calcium intake. Do the calcium supplements have vitamin D in them too?

My docs simply suggested Tums. Easy and cheap This is what I took when I was pregnant. I didn't have heartburn, but the dr said it was way better than taking giant pills. He was right!

If the milk is fortified, isn't that the same as taking a supplement? How is adding calcium to milk different than taking a pill? Isn't it just basically a dissolved pill?

Costco has some calcium chews that are really good. I take one a day and get the rest of my calcium through food..I think you're supposed to take two per day. They are good enough to satisfy my chocolate fix after dinner!

I like Citrical minis because I hate swallowing large pills. Gummy chewables have too much sugar for me.

Because I get more out of the coconut milk than I would a calcium supplement ( depending on what else is in the supplement ). When I think of supplements I think of pill form. If a way of supplements is through fortified foods and drinks then I takes supplements too.

Are you taking D? If not, the supplement is a waste of time. The most recent data seems to point in the direction that Vit D supplementation is far more important than calcium supplementation. Oh.. and don't take D and Calcium at the same time. They work better as supplements if taken at different times of the day.
I had a recent bone density and was surprised to see how good it was. I only have been taking D. Have not taken calcium in ages. But, I do get calcium from other sources, albeit not dairy!

My bone density improved with Vitamin D and weight bearing exercises. No calcium supplements, just calcium intake from foods. My doctor believes in as few supplements as possible.

I second the vitamin D. Also, your body can absorb only 500 mg of calcium at a time. So to get the full dose, you need to take smaller doses multiple times a day.
Calcium, vitamin D and weight bearing exercise are the three pillars.

I used to have low Vitamin D but it is now within normal limits. She wants me to continue on the 1,000 IU. I also have a cup of Almond Milk each morning which has 45% Calcium. And I get daily exercise. She was very pleased with my physical, and I was too. I left with a little skip in my step. Best physical I have had in several years, and at 51 I will say I was quite excited. And thanks for letting me know about not taking my Vit. D and Calcium at the same time. And burningfeather, I too thought they were quite sugary plus the calories thus my post. I will definitely look at just chewing my tums each day. Great idea everyone! But I guess I will finish the sugary goodness first. LOL!

I take Caltrate because the calcium in this product is incorporated more readily by the body than the calcium in Tums. I also take a vitamin D supplement, but not at the same time as Me,Issa pointed out. I have been doing this for several years under my PCP direction, and my bone density for my age (78) is excellent.

I am not a doctor and I don't play one on tv, but I have a pesky dr in the famly. I think I recall him telling me that you also need magnesium for your body to absorb vitamin D. And you need vitamin D for your body to process Calcium. It's all connected. Also, Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin so your body needs healthy fat to metabolize it. To add to that, an unhealthy gut can bind vitamin D making it unusable, so taking in probiotics (fermented foods & drinks) helps with that. It's all a crazy, but ingeniously designed systems that can be hard to us to maintain with our modern lifestyles and heightened stress levels!
Not related, but still cool. Speaking of healthy fats, 2 TBS of olive oil has the same anti-inflammatory properties as a dose of ibuprofen. I'll take that!

melissa can we get away with just taking Vit D because I can't take calcium pills without a lot of grief? I am supposed to take 4000 iu or something like that a day and right now I am taking nothing because I don't want the same problem I have with Ca+ and don't want to go back there. I get leg cramps when I swim. It happens every time I go. It's such a pain and PAIN. I take 10 pills a day as it is and taking more just makes me sick thinking about it. The 10 I take I need to stay alive. Others? Not sure.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that. I can only say that I personally stopped taking them and was relieved that my bone density was good.
1200 mg per day is the standard recommendation for someone aged 51. I am sure that age comes into play as 51 is the average age for menopause in the US (obviously a wide range and using the definition of menopause as the end of menstruation, a date that can only be determined after 1 year of no periods and not for any other reason).
Whether or not you need more or less calcium is something to review in detail with your own doc who knows all the details of your history etc.

Try Viactiv +D. They taste like tootsie rolls and are only 20 calories!
