I want to make an svg of an image (state map with counties), but I can't figure out how to make it so only one line cuts versus it cutting on either side of the black line in the image.
Anyone know how to do that?

I hope I am understanding correctly. Try this-
Select All Path- Union Select All Path- Object to Path
Then choose your Edit Path by Nodes. It is on the left hand side. The second button down with the little arrow and nodes. I am sure you know all of this. :)I have written graphic tutorials in the past and somebody didn't know a command so I always include everything.
After you choose Edit Path by Nodes you should be able to check the nodes and tell if they are going to cut the way you want them.
Hope that helps.

Thanks! I haven't used inkscape since my wishblade became an expensive paperweight (pc died and new one wouldn't run the wishblade program). As soon as I followed your directions, I remembered a bunch more.
