I am getting tired of spending so much $ on drops and ointments and still suffering. I forked out $60 on the recommendation of my ophthalmologist for night goggles and tried them last night and they helped, but don't do anything during the day.
Medication that increases tear production won't help, because my thyroid eye disease has made the quality of my tears defective. Quantity isn't the problem, but quality.
What, in addition to drugs, works for you? TFS!

Nothing. Nothing works for me. But if someone has any suggestions I'm happy to try it.

Gosh, I don't know. If it's quality rather than quantity, that's a real stumper. My husband has dry eye caused by his blood pressure medication, and he puts in drops all day long and ointment at night. Have you had your tear ducts plugged? He tried that, it didn't do a lot, but I'm sure it's effective for some people. I'm sorry you're having to deal with it, it's a PITA and also very worrisome, of course!

Fish oil! It worked miracles for me.
Do you wear contacts?

Fish oil! It worked miracles for me. Do you wear contacts? I agree. That's what my optometrist told me at my last eye exam. I've been taking 2 Omega 3's daily for the past 5 months and I don't have dry eyes anymore. It took a couple of months before they worked.

I haven't found anything that works either. My dry eye is so bad that I have recurrent corneal erosion, which is extremely painful. I do take an oil supplement specifically for dry eye (just started it a few weeks ago), and use drops frequently. I began sleeping in contact lenses 6 months ago, which has helped prevent the RCE episodes so far. I still struggle during the day.
I have tried punctual plugs. I have per ant lower plugs that haven't helped at all. Another treatment that I tried a couple years ago was IPL (Intense Pulse Light). It typically has good results for the majority of people, so you might look into it.
Dry eye sucks!

My doctor recommends eating a tablespoon of peanut butter a day and taking a tablespoon of fish oil a day. She was very adamant that I do the liquid fish oil and not the capsules. I can't say that I've seen a huge improvement so far and she said the tearing is something that may not go away for me. Some days are better than others. Hope you get some relief soon. Edited to add: The gel drops seem to work better for me than the regular kind.

Fish oil!
I admit I have stopped taking mine and this is a good push to restart. My dry eye is not year round. I pretty much only use an eye lubricant like Genteal when it happens.

Fish oil! It worked miracles for me. Do you wear contacts? Nope, no contacts, just reading glasses. I'm lucky. The thought of putting lenses in my eyes makes me cringe. It looks like I will have to try fish oil, since so many of you are recommending it. It can't hurt! My doctor recommends eating a tablespoon of peanut butter a day and taking a tablespoon of fish oil a day. She was very adamant that I do the liquid fish oil and not the capsules. Warm compress helps, you can do either wet or dry compress. Moving to a more humid place is suppose to be helpful too.

Another one who had good results after taking fish oil. My dry eyes are not bad, but after about 6 weeks of taking fish oil at my Ophthalmologist's recommendation, I noticed a definite improvement.

I've been taking fish oil religiously for the past year, if it's helping at all I hate to think how excruciatingly dry my eyes would be otherwise. Unfortunately we also just moved from a very humid climate to a very dry climate. It's been a tough summer.

At my doctors suggestion I bought a rice pouch that I can heat up in the microwave. That really does provide relief. Restasis did not work for me. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but I did have plugs put in my ducts. My doctor thought that I was losing what precious little moisture I had to the tear ducts. I have gotten major relief from when it was at its worse and it was through managing my allergies.

elaine- We've had good results with this. I have a friend who's a ski instructor and uses the liquid drink as eye drops every day, because of her dry eyes in dry Colorado. My dad has dry eyes from his rosacea and sometimes gets infections, but had great relief when I put the drops in his eyes. And I haven't had any itchy scratchy eyes from dust or pollen this year, either. It should help improve the quality of your tears- feel free to message me if you have any questions!

Am I reading this right? She's using a drink as eyedrops? I can't find any specific information on the website as to what it actually does. The usage guide only talks about drinking it. Is there an eyedrop somewhere on the site that I missed?

That you have to refrigerate the drink tells me it's not. I'm glad some people have success with it, but only sterile with no preservatives eye drops, gel and ointment for me!

I have taken fish oil for years and no one mentioned it might help. Apparently it is not helping me. I have had the tear ducts blocked. I use Miro128 ointment at night and drops during the day. I have noticed when the air pollution is bad, my eyes are much more irritated.

LOL- I had the same reaction when I first heard about it, too! The liquid can be taken as a drink (not straight out of the bottle- poured into a cup), sprayed onto the skin (poured from the bottle into a little spritzer), or as eye drops (poured into a little bottle, using a clean eye dropper). There's no need to refrigerate it. It just helps your body's cells to work better, whatever you use it on. There's no flavorings, no preservatives, etc.

Ugh... I dealt with scleritis for over a year, and am starting to deal with dry eye now. My ophthalmologist has suggested three different things to do on an ongoing basis: - Drops. Specifically preservative-free lubricant eye gel. I use Refresh Celluvisc Lubricant Eye Gel.
- I had been taking Fish Oil for a while, but he suggested Thera Tears, which combine Fish Oil and Omega-3s.
- Warm compresses. For a while, I was just heating a wash cloth in the microwave, but then I got a Thermalon Dry Eye Compress, and I love it. I heat it for 20 seconds in the microwave and it stays warm for 7-8 minutes. (My biggest problem with this is that I have a hard time sitting still and not doing anything for that long. LOL!)
You have my sympathy. Dry eye of any kind sucks, but the quality rather than quantity issue is frustrating.

Odd.......If my eyes are closed, and I'm sleeping, how would the fan make things worse? Most people's eyes are not fully closed during sleep i have no thyroid anymore. I use restasis after a year of using drops and eye ointments
