I am a chronic pain patient and I remember what it was like before my body adjusted to it. Horrible constipation! I tried everything on the market during those first few months with varying degrees of success. What I found worked the best for me was taking a stool softner (Costco sells some) every morning and every night. And I went back to making a blender shake with Perfect 7 in it. I was originally introduced to Perfect 7 when my son was going through his cancer treatments. One of the books I had came with a recipe for cancer patients to help them improve their diet without having to add more pills. I can't remember the exact recipe off the top of my head, but Perfect 7 was one of the components in it. The book warned that you would start eliminating a lot! My son absolutely did. I hadn't warned him, and it was enough of a change that he mentioned it to me. The shake helps you to clean out of a lot of the sludge that has been making its way through too slowly. It has a clay component in it, which I thought would give me the opposite problem, but it tends to bind up all the other stuff and you barely get sat down before you eliminate this copious amount that is actually a bit shocking that you body had all that in there. This is going to be a gross TMI so I will hide it for those who don't deal with elimination details very well. I think it must be the clay binding component that does this. When you go, even though you go a lot, you to only need the smallest amount of toilet paper afterward. It was remarkable. It all stays bound up together in one "log" and doesn't leave anything behind. (pun intended) I have a friend that started using it and he swore he was going to stop buying toilet paper and just use a Q-tip because that was all that was necessary for clean up. He loved that stuff. Sorry. Gross, but related detail. I have passed that recipe on to multiple people, whether they had cancer or not, because it was a really good protein shake with lots of vitamins and the ability to clean out a slow colon. You don't get any runs or surprise emergency evacuation, it works gently, but very thoroughly. You might want to consider adding it to your diet.

Dulcolex. I have an on going issue with not being regular and I have to take one Dulcolex every night before I go to bed or I can't poop the next day at all.
If I do have to go more days not taking my Dulcolex I have to take 2 but never ever take 3 at a time. You will never get off the toilet.
I have tried almost every stool helping medicine out there and I have stayed with Dulcolex the longest.
Good luck...

If it's been five days then probably you won't be taking them much longer anyway...? I mean, since you said it's from surgery and not a chronic pain management thing. I know my dd took some strong narcotic after her recent knee surgery but it was only for a few days and then she switched to a non-narcotic. She ate Fiber One bars and that seems to prevent any problem. Otherwise I'd say try warm prune juice. But it seems to work, better than cold juice. Not sure what it is about the "warm" part, but whatever... Good luck! Maybe mix it with a can of sprite that hasn't been refrigerated? That's the only way I can stand prune juice. I have to give my son Miralax on a regular basis but don't know if it would help in this situation.

Do you drink coffee? A cup of hot coffee helps me. How about warm prune juice? I was going to say coffee, too.

Thar' she blowsAlso a chronic pain patient with a thyroid disorder. Fun times. So in my search for a cure I once found this site with nurses from nursing homes talking about it. They work... Good luck. Feel better!

When my DD was terribly constipated, her dr had her take a dose of Miralax 2X a day and an enema every night until her bowels started working again. Once they were moving, we cut back to once a day on the Miralax. After a week or two of this, she took Miralax once every other day. If she missed going to the bathroom one day, she took a daily dose of Miralax until she was regular again.

For narcotic induced constipation you need a stimulant.
I would suggest Sennosides + Docusate (Senokot-S or just get the sennosides and take your Colace (docusate) with it).
One thing we learned in pharmacy school...
You need some push for the moosh (i.e. colace (docusate) will only soften the stool, but you have to have a stimulant to push it out with narcotic-induced constipation). Also, as long as you are taking narcotics, you will need medications for constipation. It's not a side-effect that goes away with continued use.

If she missed going to the bathroom one day, she took a daily dose of Miralax until she was regular again. Marcy This has been my cure. I'm a life long walking constipation problem. I usually have to resort to enemas for immediate relief and to get things moving enough for miralax to work for better regularity. Here's my secret to enemas: buy any brand enema at the store, poor 1/4 of it out and replace with mineral oil (they are both located in the same area of the store). Warm the contents to just above room temperature, then use as directed. I get immediate movement with this method. Out of the box enemas don't work for me, but warming with oil always does the trick. TMI: Sometimes I get lazy or forgetful about my non existent BM's because not going is my normal and 10 days later I'm forced to do the enema route. It sounds unpleasant but honesty it's no big deal and the nozzle is so small you don't really feel it.

Would you be okay eating some coconut oil off of a spoon? I find it really helps me stay regular. My favorite way to eat it is on crunchy toasted grainy bread with salt on top. yum!

A senna laxative is pretty gentle but effective. If it's been 5 days, you might want to go for a suppository, though. That will help things along a lot faster and make it easier to go. In the end (pun!) that's what I had to do. What a relief.

Apple juice works for me, also dr. Pepper from a soda fountain, not can, no idea why it has to be soda fountain. You can also add miralax to apple juice.

Smooth Move Tea. Not sure of the brand, but it's in the tea section at our Publix. One small cup does the trick - usually takes a few hours to work, and you will go until you're pretty well cleaned out. This tea is gentle but it works. Lots of people in my extended family use and recommend it. It's in the healthy section I think, and it's a licorice tea I think.
