But if you've been on pain pills (which I have for the past week due to surgery) and they've kept you from being regular, what worked for you?? Dr's Office told me colace but no luck so far

Colace. How long has it been since you took your first dose? Sometimes it can take a bit to kick in. And then watch out!

Ha ha ha! Colace. I wish. I would just drink water until you feel like you're going to throw up.

Might have to take senna, MOM, or if really bad, a suppository or enema. Some people only need prunes or certain fruits but many people need something stronger.

Not necessarily due to meds, but when I'm backed up, I either drink prune juice, or eat Chipotle!

My doctor recommended Pepto Bismol after my surgery and seemed to work. I hope you feel better soon.

Do you drink coffee? A cup of hot coffee helps me. How about warm prune juice?

My DH has been on copious quantities of pain killers for many years. They have given him lots of things to help with constipation. Even a med that is used to force cancer patients to have a movement. Nothing worked as well as plain old prune juice. He used to be tube fed, so I would give him quite a bit while he slept. He no longer has a tube and is using a prescription version of something like Metamucil. It works when he takes it.

A senna laxative is pretty gentle but effective. If it's been 5 days, you might want to go for a suppository, though. That will help things along a lot faster and make it easier to go.

If it's been five days then probably you won't be taking them much longer anyway...? I mean, since you said it's from surgery and not a chronic pain management thing. I know my dd took some strong narcotic after her recent knee surgery but it was only for a few days and then she switched to a non-narcotic. She ate Fiber One bars and that seems to prevent any problem. Otherwise I'd say try warm prune juice. But it seems to work, better than cold juice. Not sure what it is about the "warm" part, but whatever... Good luck!

You might give ibuprofen a try. You can get it as a prescription -- dd's was 800 mg Motrin -- so it's only one pill to take. You could just take several of the lower mg over-the-counter one but dd's doctor didn't recommend that. And if you have decent insurance the generic prescription is cheaper. Anyway, it worked well for dd, although of course she was immobile on the couch not out working! SaveSave

Miralax to get things going again. Then, prune juice or eating prunes daily until a few days off the pain meds.

Do you drink coffee? A cup of hot coffee helps me. How about warm prune juice? add some milk of magnesia if that doesn't work. Keep taking more until it works. everyone is different and sometimes you might overdo the laxatives, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do! Colace is not a laxative...stool softener.

My anti seizure meds make me constipated. I take a script called Linzess, if it gets real bad ask for the script. Until you know how it works on you stay close to a toilet!!

Omgosh I was going to start a thread about this issue! haha I have chronic constipation (not related to pain pills). None of my usual helps, are helping and I'm going nuts. I walk, I drink at least 72 ounces of water (not including apple juice or milk) I have been eating well the last few months. I started to take 1 Dulcolax a day on Saturday and 1on Sunday. This sometimes results in nothing. Sometimes I just go a lot. Sometimes its diarrhea. I do have a Dr appt coming up in about 6 weeks. If anyone else has suggestions. I will go back and read what everyone has said so far.
ETA: I have tried Miralx for a week or 2 also, daily, to no help

Smooth Move Tea. Not sure of the brand, but it's in the tea section at our Publix. One small cup does the trick - usually takes a few hours to work, and you will go until you're pretty well cleaned out.

A brown cow-Milk of mag and prune juice mixed together. chug it. And yea, you really shouldn't be taking any narco's at work. You aren't driving there, right?!

Might have to take senna, MOM, or if really bad, a suppository or enema. Some people only need prunes or certain fruits but many people need something stronger. This is the only thing that works for me. After childbirth it took me ten days. Nature's Way is the brand. A friend who told me about it said it was the only brand that worked for her. You can feel it working, but not like it does with some of the more popular brands.

My son had chronic constipation, and eating a few fig newton cookies every day kept him regular enough that I stopped his Mirilax.
For me, last time I had pain meds, I stopped for McDonalds and had some greasy fries and a cheeseburger, did the trick for me.
hope you feel better soon

I abused Senacot for a long time. It does work, but I was taking like 20 pills at a time. Then I would throw up. It did work, though.
Grapes work well, prune plums, apples, Metamucil and other types of stool softeners and laxatives.
