We had to start one of our guys on Prozac 1 1/2 weeks ago for his tremendous anxiety. I know it will not take effect for 2-4 weeks; however, we have seen very negative side effects. He is very tired, not interested in playing with his brother, and he has no appetite! It's killing me seeing him like this. I have a call in to the vet but he has been in surgery. Does this go away and get better or do we need a new med? I hate to take him off without giving it a chance but this is terrible, and his anxiety is just the same. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I have a cat on prozac. The vet warned me about the kinds of side effects you're seeing, but my Cassie didn't have any of them. She's tiny to begin with, so the vet wanted me to watch her eating habits closely, but it wasn't a problem.
I'd definitely check with the vet. Perhaps he'll want to reduce the dose rather than take your dog off it? I hope it all works out well.

Aw, I'm sorry. One of our little BTs takes Prozac, but she hasn't had those side effects. It does help with her anxiety and fits of aggressiveness ( with the other two dogs when startled or anxious). It hasn't made her problems disappear, but it does really help take the edge off, and there's a noticeable difference if she doesn't get her pill. She's been on it for 2-3 years now.
I hope that things will improve with the Prozac or that you can find something else that works.

Not Prozac but I had a cat on small doses of valium once for anxiety. Thankfully it was just a temporary measure. Maybe adjusting the dosage would help?

My cat used to overgroom herself so the vet gave her Prozac and she stop purring that was so sad that we stop the Prozac and a year later she stopped to overgroom herself and her fur grow back .

Well, the vet is going to lower the dose from 40 mg to 30 mg. If that still doesn't work, we will try something else. I really pray this works. Poor pup!

I hope the lower dose works/helps I was hoping this would be a 'what things do you do for your pets that people might think is out there' thread Yes, I feel weird and need to know I'm not crazy for taking my dog to the chiropractor I can see a difference in his movement and now his breeder said she can see a difference. But is she just saying that to make me feel better

I hope you find something that works for him. We have our cat on some anti-anxiety medicine and he didn't have any side effects. Poor guy is so jumpy and nervous. Scared of his own shadow. He's been on medication for 4-5months now. We are hoping it will also help with his bladder infections he gets. But I think that is because he hates the litter box and holds his pee in forever.

I had to give my cat a Valium this summer before his vet visit. It stressed me out as much as it calmed him down. It made him very unsteady on his feet. Patter, I hope this new dose makes things more manageable for both of you.

Thank you everyone! I pray it works too. He has been socialized just like his brother but he is more and more scared of everything. I ache for him. He too will just hold off going to the bathroom because he doesn't want to go out. I wish all of these people would stop building houses and doing construction on their homes. It has been quiet around here for 3 1/2 years but for the past 6 months during his critical puppy period this chaos has been going on. So sad for him. And gmcwife1, I am glad you have found something that works. Seeing our fur babies hurt makes us hurt for sure!!!

Awww....anxiety is so difficult, in pets and in people both. Sure hope the reduced dose works and the side affects disappear.

My neighbor's dog also suffers from anxiety. He is now on a low dose of Klonipin, which seems to be helping him tremendously.
I hope the lower dose does the charm for your little guy. If not, it seems there are several other kinds of medications they can try until they find the right one for him.

Our cat was on Prozac for a few years before I took her off because she was getting older and I worried about the damage it might do to her over time. I don't remember what effect it had on her when she first started taking it. Once our other cat died, this one seemed to calm down more and not "seek revenge" because you looked at her wrong so I didn't feel like the Prozac was necessary.
I don't know if you are aware of it or not, but we were able to get generic Prozac at Walmart for $4. It save a lot of money.
