Well, I have a Maytag Bravos X that is only 3 1/2 years old. It died yesterday. The guy was just here, and said I need a new board. He said it's better to just buy a new machine. He also said he repairs LG and Samsung all day long and to stay away from them. He recommends Whirlpool with a real agitator. I don't want a new washer. I have LOVED mine and it matches my dryer. Anyone have one they love that has actually lasted? He said the new stuff all has so many features that they just die within a few years. Hate that. Who knew I would cry over my washer. UPDATE:Well, after visiting four stores, looking at websites and reviews for hours, here is what I got: Whirlpool Duet 4.3 cu. ft. High-Efficiency Front Load Washer with Steam in Chrome ShadowI hope I like it. And I bought the warranty this time. We never, ever do that but because they build these things like computers now, they are apt to break.

I was recently involved in the purchase of a new washer... The old one died after less than two years, although it did get heavy use. We were advised to avoid high efficiency machines and to go with an agitator!

Speed Queen with manual dials. It's a good, old fashioned, tank of a washer. A real agitator, stainless steel drum, no water restrictions, and a 10 year warranty.

scrapaddie, do you know the name/model? I guess I will look into the Whirlpool Cabrio. I just hope it's not too big. Don't need a huge washer, and I want silver to match what I have. And I still don't want a new washer. I am going kicking and screaming.

Only 3 1/2 years old? Is it not still under warranty? My Maytag was warrantied for 5 years.

I'm not sure whether or not to thank you for that post!
I have wanted a newer high tech washer/dryer. Would love to have the steaming option on a dryer and I think I might like a front loader. But, no. I have the relatively inexpensive Whirlpool washer and dryer that we bought when we moved in here 15+ years ago. Have had to replace the belt in the dryer twice (dh looked up how to do that himself). The washer has needed absolutely nothing. It wasn't the complete bottom of the line, but close to it. It's a workhorse.
Anyway, dh has always been against the fancier washers and dryers because he says there are too many parts to break. Go basic and it will last forever.

We had a Kenmore HE machine for at least 5 years that never gave us any trouble. We moved, so I don't know if it's still working, but it was always good to us.
We have LG HE at our new place. We've been here 2 years with no troubles <knock on wood>.

I have a Bosch. 9 years & going strong. When it comes time for a new one, I think I'm going to consider the good ole Speed queen. It has nothing but good reviews.

Giiiirrrl...I think that is the same machine I have. It died too. I had extended warranty so Home Depot actually gave me my money back! We are getting a Speed Queen (?) I think it's called? My husband works in Kitchen and Bath remodeling and long story short, the Speed Queen is VERY reliable. We are getting it this weekend, I think. My Maytag actually still works but they said we could still use it until it "offically" dies...hard to explain, but it sounds like an airplane taking off (SUPER LOUD!) and it will eventually stop working.

I've had a Maytag Bravos MCT for 9 years and its going strong. It's HE but top loading, and I like it a lot.
I had a front loader before and hated it - could not get rid of the smell - think it was GE. We did everything - monthly cleaning, left the door open except when in use

I have had a few washers and none of them have ever died. I've gotten new ones because of a divorce, or inherited new ones from family. About 3 years ago I got a new washer because I had my mom's front loader and the drum had a snag in it that would catch on my clothes. I decided I hated the front loader and I went and bought a top loader. My SO has has 3 high end washers in the 11 years we've been together. His last one he bought around the same time I bought mine...he just had to replace his again because his other one died. Luckily, it was still under the extended warranty so he got a new one for free. Anyway, when we were shopping for washers I wanted an agitator free top loader that wasn't computerized. I have had NO issues with my washer. I don't expect to have any issues with my washer. I think those with the computers are the problems. Granted, mine has some computer in it, but there's no programming in times, error codes, etc. I turn the dial to the settings I want and hit the lock button. I firmly believe that the more bells and whistles an item has the more they are likely to break. I believe mine is a Maytag HE, but the lowest end of the HE

I have a maytag bravos that is about 5 years old. Runs great - love it. Now that I've said that - it will probably die this weekend I bought one of the lowest models of the line. It doesn't have any of the fancy features that I would probably never use. My,reasoning behind getting this model was that I won't even call a repair man when it stops working. I'll just buy new. There are also fewer things that can go wrong. I bought it on sale and there was a rebate from our water company so it was very cheap. I'm not going to spend $200 to have a repair man come to the house when it's only a few hundred dollars more to buy a new one. I've realized over the years that my high end appliances don't hold up any better that the lower end models. I now look at most of my appliances as disposable items. So if you can get a new bravos that matches - buy that but on the lower end and just know you will replace it when it dies.

We bought an electrolux when built our house last year. I like it. It works well.
My next choice would be a Speed Queen.

I have a Cabrio and I don't like it. It is about 5 years old, and we have replaced the electronics in it twice. Luckily we are selling our house and they are going to stay with the house. I will be buying a Speed Queen next with manual dials and an agitator I want no electronics.

We bought Speed Queen 2 months ago. My agitator quit working - 15 year old Maytag. I got the electronic board on washer and dryer. Speed Queen is phasing out manual controls and the warranty is better now on electronic board controls.
My Mother got Speed Queen washer a year or so ago and loves it.

Check with the manufacturer and where you bought your machine. My board went and the repair was covered under warranty. Check your service manual. If it is covered ask for someone else to come in to repair it.

I also have a Maytag, I think it's a Centennial or something like that. HE, no agitator, plane Jane with dials instead of electronics. Have had it about 4 years and so far, so good. Got it at Lowe's cheap at a pre-Black Friday sale to replace my expensive front loader Kenmore which only lasted about 5 years before the drum went. Local appliance repair guy said nowadays manufacturers are only making washers to last 4-5 years.

My Whirlpool (top loading, no agitator) recently overheated and fried the board. It was 3 years old so our extended warranty covered the repairs. My Whirlpool before that (top load with agitator) was 9 years old when we sold our house where it lived and never needed repairs.
They don't make things to last anymore...

Speed Queen with manual dials. It's a good, old fashioned, tank of a washer. A real agitator, stainless steel drum, no water restrictions, and a 10 year warranty. Samesies... only mine is a GE. My dryer was taking waaayyyy too long to dry a load some time back and we decided to replace it. As the washer was older as well, we opted to get a new pair. I did NOT want a front loader. And I did not want one of the new ones that predetermine the water level, etc. I am super old-fashioned when it comes to appliances... which became problematic because old-fashioned appliances are getting harder and harder to find. So while you all discuss your space-age-super-fancy washers and dryers, @missjen and I will be sitting over here with our basic work horses. Lol. To each his own, right?
