We have a Cabrio washing machine that we bought less than four years ago. One repairman told me to go get a new one. I hate the waste for the landfill. I'm waiting for another repairman to come out next week. I love that my washing machine and dryer match. I'm glad you can do laundry again.

Anyway, dh has always been against the fancier washers and dryers because he says there are too many parts to break. Go basic and it will last forever. My DH does appliance repair and is not looking forward to the newest Samsung (I think) washer that's been advertised recently. The front-loading washer with the little door that you can add to the washer once the cycle has started. More parts that can break and cause problems. We have a top-loading Fisher-Paykel that's at least 10 years old. It spins nearly as fast as a front-loader, but doesn't have the mold issues that so many front-loaders have. Never had a problem with it yet. Patter- did the repairman tell you how much it would cost to replace the control board? It should be a lot less than replacing a washer (of course, I don't know how much the labor rate is in your area).

UPDATE: Well, after visiting four stores, looking at websites and reviews for hours, here is what I got: Whirlpool Duet 4.3 cu. ft. High-Efficiency Front Load Washer with Steam in Chrome ShadowI hope I like it. And I bought the warranty this time. We never, ever do that but because they build these things like computers now, they are apt to break. I bought the Duet dryer. That is awesome. If the washer is anything like the dryer you will be pleased.

I have the whirlpool duet (not with steam but with wrinkle shield) set. Purchased when we moved 8 years ago and they are still going strong. Knock on wood. They are great, no complaints and would purchase same ones again if needed to. Enjoy!

I would *love* to have mine die but it will probably last forever! It's a 13 year old kitchen aid top load. I would love to get a high capacity top loader with no agitator that had a water saving feature because we haul our water. Just because I want it to die it won't, lol!

scrapaddie , do you know the name/model? I guess I will look into the Whirlpool Cabrio. I just hope it's not too big. Don't need a huge washer, and I want silver to match what I have. And I still don't want a new washer. I am going kicking and screaming. I am sorry but I don't know the model name. It is big... We need large capacity to serve homeless families. We also didn't want to buy a new one. The old one wa still under warranty, but they wouldn't honor it because the serial number was only under the door and it had rubbed off!!! I was really angry! We're a non profit and have to beg for every cent we get!

Hope you like your new washer Patter. Ugh I have problems with mine too, though it may be user error after I tried cleaning the filter! It's only a year old but thankfully has a 5 year warranty - it's just the hassle of having to get it seen to.

Ours is getting loud and sounding like something is coming apart. It gets off balance all the time. I was wanting a top load but without the middle agitator but I am reading others here saying to get it. I hate when strings and straps get caught and stretched. Why is the no agitator option not getting good reviews?

Then add in labor and possible other parts, it was smarter to just buy a new machine. We figured it would just end up being a "cash guzzler," so a new one it is.

My basic Maytag washer and dryer are almost 25 years old and going strong. My husband replaced the motor in the dryer once and that's it. I hope they never die

Well, I have a Maytag Bravos X that is only 3 1/2 years old. It died yesterday. The guy was just here, and said I need a new board. He said it's better to just buy a new machine. He also said he repairs LG and Samsung all day long and to stay away from them. He recommends Whirlpool with a real agitator. I don't want a new washer. I have LOVED mine and it matches my dryer. Anyone have one they love that has actually lasted? He said the new stuff all has so many features that they just die within a few years. Hate that. Who knew I would cry over my washer. I suspect it has an old fashion belt in it... I figure this way my handyman can fix most things if something does go wrong with it.
and the lid doesn't lock closed while washing.

Bumping this thread because my washer died! It's a Kenmore and over 10 years old. It did a fine job but we could never get rid of the smell and the mildew. Where do you find Speed Queen washers? Yes, I've googled, but only see them on Amazon. The other results show Kenmore and GE for places like Home Depot and Sears? It makes sense to get a top loader. When I worked at an assisted living center, they used top loading washers (can't remember the brand!) almost 24 hours a day.

I want a new washer so bad!! My front load LG is 8 years old and has never cleaned very well and I can't get rid of the horrible smell inside. I want a top loader again and one that fills all the way and you can open the door during the cycle. I clicked on the SpeedQueen site "where to buy" and it came up with about 5 places (most are around 15 to 25 miles away) but they are all small shop sounding businesses so it sounds like it will be very expensive to buy a SpeedQueen.
Any ideas on how the cost compares to other brands? Thanks.

We just got back from there and they were $800 and $900. The capacity was 3.3 The cheaper one had the manual dials. We are still comparing and I'll have to tell my husband about your experience with the LG because he's thinking of getting one instead. The one he saw was over $500 and it was silver. I do lots of laundry and wash a lot of blankets. As cheap as I am, I think the Speed Queen may be the better fit long term.

Only online or at independent appliance dealers. I bought mine from Amazon. I think AN might have, too. Delivery took about a week, but no shipping and no tax so the savings was worth the wait. We had to install it ourselves, but that wasn't hard and again, worth the savings and definitely worth the machine we got. While Speed Queens don't have the fancy bells and whistles or the sleek design/colors of other machines, they are built to last 25 years with an average usage of 8 loads per week. Other machines are tested at 4 loads per week and their average life-span is 3 - 5 years. It's a no-brainer, lol. Get thee a Speed Queen! You won't regret it. L

After 2 sets of front load washers I bought a cabrio top loader about 6 years ago. Best washer I've had since I got rid of my mom's 60s model that she gave me when I got married. The only issue I've had is that it had a glass lid and the glass shattered about 3 years ago after one of the hinges broke - just out of the blue shattered into a million pc while no one was even in the room ( I was in the other room and heard the POP). So Dh took it off the last hinge and replaced the glass with acrylic. I now have to take the lid off and on (like, all the way off - it just sits on top when it's washing). We just didn't have the free money at the time to replace it and the lid was almost $300.
So now he bugs me constantly about getting a new washer and I'm resisting. It is a great washer, it just looks a little sketchy with the jack-leg lid on it LOL. I'll keep it as-is until it dies..and then I'll get another cabrio TOP LOAD with a metal lid. I'll never buy front load again after all the problems I had with the other two.
Glad you found something and I hope you love it!
