I just bought a new EK rotary paper trimmer at HL and noticed that on the back of the package is printed the warning "this product contains a chemical known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm."
I've seen the same blurb on some PL and Heidi Swapp products as well. Normally I wouldn't really pay much attention, but as a preggo scrapper, I don't want to unintentionally cause harm to my unborn baby. I'm not planning to put my mouth on the trimmer...if I just wash my hands after I use it, do you think that will take care of any chemical issues?

California makes just about everyone put this on their products. The crazy thing is that they don't state what chemical it is.

According to Google, there's a list of 800+ chemicals that result in the warning being placed on the product. I think I'll just go ahead and use it and just make sure not to ingest any trimmer parts!

California does not make anyone put the warning on the packages....per se.
What California did do was tell all the companies that if you do not put it on a product that may cause cancer, even if no one knew it would cause cancer, then your company is liable. So now everyone puts it on the package to protect their company.
The labeling does make one take pause and think about the possibility doesn't it?
Your going to have to judge for yourself. Glue with fumes? May be bad. Elmers school glue? No problem. The rotary cutter? Good for cutting paper. I would not worry about the rotary paper cutter.

I've spotted the same warning on many products, which makes it completely ineffective!

The thing is...it desensitizes people. You might one day pick up something with a real risk and not know it/brush it off like you always do because you overlooked it on 999,999 other things because of the CYA nature of it.

The company should have something called a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS.) You could call them and ask for it.

I went to a seminar in California for work last year, and the doors to the hotel conference rooms had the same warning. It was weird.

California has super-strict rules for chemical limits and much lower limits on labeling for those types of POSSIBLE carcinogens than other states do.
I work for a nutritional supplement company and we use natural products like ground up herbs and other plant materials... even some of THOSE fail the super-strict California limits for lead, which is crazy.

You find that warning whenever you enter most any public building in California. Every government building has it posted at the entrance as do grocery stores, drug stores, department stores, restaurants - even the ice cream shop! Actually, I can't remember any store that doesn't have it posted. It is bureaucracy run amok! Pretty stupid to post the warning, but not have to list what it is that might be harmful to you.

Just wanted to pop in and say that I've read and appreciate everyone's input. I haven't used the Toxic Trimmer yet, but I'm feeling less leery of it than I did initially.

Having just left California after living there for three years, I concur with previous posters. Apparently every molecule of every element may cause cancer...in the state of California. I also agree that slapping this "warning" on virtually any product or surface is not helpful as people become conditioned to ignore it.
Who knows..maybe California will have the last laugh when everyone in all other states is dead because we didn't have warnings on our Ziploc baggies, shampoo, etc.
Have fun with your new toy!

I'd be more concerned about the chemicals in the glues and adhesives and the dyes they use on paper than I'd be about the components in a paper trimmer.

I forgot about those. thankfully I don't do embossing anymore. if they ever find something wrong with the color mist sprays i'll be in deep trouble because I have dozens and dozens of those bottles laying around. LOL
