I want to start using embossing folders and maybe venture into dies that go with matching stamps. Should I invest in a big shot/big kick machine from the get go or invest in a cuttlebug? I have a cameo for most of my cutting needs already. I was looking at used machines on ebay. What advice can you give me?
Update: I returned to Joann's and bought the Big Kick, for $37.99 clearance I couldn't pass it up. I did notice that Joann's, ACMoore and Michaels seem to be clearing out all their Sizzix products. Michael's didn't even have an embossing folder in stock. Joann's and ACMoore only had Darice folders left. Joann's had a huge area for clearance for Sizzix that was sold out. I Noted that Joann's Darice folders are $1 more than the same folders at ACMoore. I plan to check out Tuesday Morning and Alixpress. Thanks for everyone's input.

I've had my Cuttlebug for years and years. It's my small and mighty machine. I store it in my Raskog with the plates and most of the dies I have on one shelf. I've never had a problem, good luck!

My recommendation would be to invest in a Big Shot. I had a Cuttlebug years ago and sold it to get a Big Shot. In my opinion the Big Shot is a sturdier machine and it doesn't move around as much on your work surface when you're feeding a die through it. However, it is bigger and heavier so if you need something more portable, you might want to consider the Cuttlebug. I have had my Big Shot for years! It has NEVER let me down. A very worthwhile investment.

I've had my Cuttlebug for a long time. I'd like to get a Big Shot Plus because of the width of the cutting area. But I don't have a lot of room on my table. So, the only thing that keeps me from buying a Big Shot is the CB folds up. It works fine other than the size limitation.

The Big Shot/ Big Kick is more versatile right out of the box IMHO. The cuttlebug needs a extra add on plates and platforms to cut the various kinds of dies, and I think the Big Shot has a wider cutting and embossing path to accommodate bigger things.

Saw a Big Kick on clearance at Joann's today for $40, to bad the extra % off doesn't apply to machines. I might go back and buy it. I saw they had a few embossing folders left on the clearance rack for $3.99 I believe. They were sizzix and Tim Holtz.

IMHO you should RUN back to the store & purchase the Big Kick on clearance! It's a workhorse that will emboss the folders you have now & cut dies should you choose to add them to your inventory in the future.

I started with the Cuttlebug and upgraded to the Big Shot after a few years. IMO the Big Shot/Big Kick is a superior machine - more stable, cuts more evenly. The only reason to ge the CB would,be if you're short of space and/or want something to take to crops because it has a smaller footprint and is more portable.

Yes, run back and grab that machine. That is a great price.
I have both the Cuttlebug & Big Shot. I use my Cuttlebug for paper crafting. I have no particular reason for this. I started with the Cuttlebug first and I have my recipes memorized. I use Big Shot for quilting, felties, jewelry making, project that are not paper. I love the Big Shot for those kind of projects because it is so sturdy. It does take up a lot of room. I have the Vintaj that came with the extended platform so that is hard to store. My Cuttlebug plates fit in the basket with my embossing folders.
My plates on both machines need to be replaced. The Cuttlebug plates used to be so easy to find and cheaper than the Big Shot plates. I am finding the Cuttlebug plates are harder for me to find locally. I live in the third largest city in my state. Online the Cuttlebug plates are more expensive than the Sizzix plates. I wanted to bring that up in case that could be an issue for you. This might not be the case for a lot of Cuttlebug users. It is one that I just discovered this week. A quick note I can find the Sizzix plates locally and cheaper online- Ebay & Amazon.
Hope that helps.

Michael's bought out the parent company of Darice earlier this year. link to story Their inventory (along with that of their major competitors) is probably going to be retooled as the result of that. The Tuesday Morning near me recently had a lot of embossing folders by Sizzix, Tim Holtz and some from WeR. It would be worth a trip or a call to see if yours has any.

Stopped at Tuesday Morning and they always have a ton of embossing folders. I am ashamed to say I induldged but tried to stick to folders that would be the most versatile. I can't feel too bad though because a lady next to me was doing the same and she picked up a smaller cuttlebug sized machine for $25. Made me feel even luckier that I got the Big Kick for such a low price.
Are there any more stores that carry dies/embossing folders for cheap? Any place online?

I have a big shot and a cameo. I love the big shot for quick cutting and embossing. I was also investigating how to use it for letterpress. I saw that WeR has a letterpress plate that supposedly will work with the big shot but I found a lot of mixed reviews about how well it works. I am still very interested in it if anyone else has it and would like to comment. It may be worth it´s own question...
