A dear friend's 22 yo dd is in the hospital from an apparent rx drug overdose. She is in ICU, in critical but stable condition, in a coma, not sedated and intubated. She may have been without or with limited oxygen for a time before getting to the hospital as she aspirated vomit. She was hospitalized yesterday. Today is looking more hopeful, she is now gagging when they suction her lungs, her pupils are responding to light, she moved her arm when a nurse applied pain to her and is breathing some on her own but still on the vent. She is not responding to voices. Everyone is praying for a miracle and drs. say it could go either way. Prayers are appreciated if you would like to pray for her and her family.
If you have any experience with this (I am so sorry if you do!) or medical knowledge what do you think her chances of recovery are? How long might she stay in a coma? If she wakes up and doesn't have brain damage what will her recovery time be? I would have thought they would do an MRI but the whole plan is just to wait and see if she wakes up. I am personally hopeful but her parents are not.

How terrible. I'm a nurse and I highly doubt even the doctors who've examined her would make such predictions. You are a blessing to your friend by wanting to help and support her.

Brain injuries are very individual and there is no way for me (RN) to even guess.Thank you for supporting your friend. Having a loved one in the ICU is stressful.

Exactly this...there is no real way for anyone here to answer those questions. She could fully recover, or she could have lasting effects with her cognition or motor skills.

Physically, she is recovering miraculously well! She OD'd on a variety of prescription psych drugs. She took more and more because she was having a really bad mental breakdown and they were not working. She thought taking more would help. At the moment she's in a locked down psychiatric hospital. We're still praying for her mental health as she has a long way to go in that department. She's alive and safe and that's a huge improvement from where she was 10 days ago. Thanks so much for asking, peaname

I have a little bit of experience with this. May of this year I took plenty of my Rx drugs to end the pain i was in. It didn't work. I got caught by the police and they took me in. Activated charcoal was what they gave me. I must not have taken enough or something.
I feel for this young woman. It's horrible to be in this much pain. There is no light at the end of the tunnel. I will do prayers for her. She sounds like she needs a miracle.
