So I wash my hair every day. I'm going to try for the next month to wash it every other day. This will be a struggle as I haven't done this in 20+ years. Any tips? I'm so worried ill have that "dirty hair" smell. Like...anxiety inducing worry. I'm going to wear a shower cap for days I don't wash it (not showering isn't an option!). Any dry shampoo suggestions? Any tips? Edit: update on bottom of page 2.

On the days you do wash, be sure to massage your scalp well-- it helps to push out some of the excess oil (and it's why when you get your hair washed at the salon it feels so great on the second day, or so I've heard).

I wash mine every other day and don't use a shower cap on the day I don't. It doesn't smell. I have naturally curly hair and the days I don't wash, but get it wet it curls very nicely.

I'm an every other day girl. Dry shampoo is helpful for days it seems there might be a "slick" spot and for a touch of good smell. I have three dds and none of them have ever told me my hair smells on second day hair and I've been doing this for years. Good luck!

If it's going to cause anxiety inducing worry why would you do it. If I go a day without washing which doesn't happen very often I still get it wet in the shower.

I went from twice a day (I know, I know - once before work and once after the gym) to every other day without too much trouble. My hair is medium-long.
For the first few weeks I felt like I had a "dirty little secret" on the days I didn't wash it. I quickly realized that no one knew or cared. LOL
I use a fairly heavy conditioner, but i focus on the ends. Overdoing the heavy conditioner on my scalp is the quickest way for my head to feel heavy and oily the next day.
ETA I do not get it wet on the days I don't wash it. The whole advantage is not to have to deal with a big, wet head every day! I use a cheap shower cap from the dollar store.

What does dirty hair smell like? Ha. The only time I have ever smelled anything from people with obviously dirty hair, is BO, or if they smoke, or drink. Then they have that odor.
My dd does every other day wash. I do mine every day except for wkends. We use Aveda's dry shampoo, and dry cleaner dry shampoo. Both are a bit spendy but do a good job.

It's a strange smell but I notice it immediately if I'm in a store or a patient comes in. It's not a body odor thing...it's just a dirty hair smell. Like grease? Could be cheap hair product build up.

I have curly hair and don't wash it every day.
My hair doesn't get oily/greasy when I don't wash it. In fact, the opposite - it gets dry when I don't wash it.
I don't use product in my hair except for a drop of leave in condition while it's wet, so that helps.
Do you have any updos that you like? If my hair isn't cooperating on the second or third day I twist it into an updo. Practice messy buns, sock buns, casual chignons, etc.

I used to work with a girl that washed her hair once every 10 days or so and she smelled - someone said she smells like used motor oil and that pretty much described it.
I work with a girl now that has that smell she rarely washes her hair and she has a nasty smell to her
If someone goes a day or two they don't smell nasty - it's when they got 7-10 plus days that they start smelling nasty
Try some Batiste dry shampoo - it really smells good and works really well

I'm another one who recommends Batiste! It seriously is the BEST! I have curly hair and wash it every three days. The dry shampoo helps with any oily spots and it smells great. You can get it at Ulta and lots of places online. They also have some tinted ones to help with roots. Batiste

I went from washing my hair every day to every two to three days. I never thought that would be possible. My hair was so oily and looked like I hadn't washed it in a year the next morning.
My stylist convinced me it was possible to retrain my hair and stop the washing madness. Here's the steps I took:
Use a small amount of shampoo, massage it into my scalp for several minutes, rinse thoroughly.
Apply conditioner to the length, paying extra attention to the ends. (I don't put it anywhere near my scalp.) Let it sit while finishing my shower, then rinse thoroughly.
The next day I put it up and do not get it wet during my shower. I shake a little bit of baby powder into my hands, rub them together and run them through my hair, rubbing it into my scalp. I have blond colored hair so this may not work for you if you need to go out right away. Try doing this step at night if you can't do it in the morning.
I had to pin my hair up or wear it in a pony tail that day, but did not give in and wash it! I felt icky all day, but my stylist told me I'd have to stick to the routine if I wanted to stop the oily madness.
It took about 3 weeks and I started noticing that I didn't have to put it up on the non wash days, another week and I was able to stop using baby powder.
Now I can go 3 to 4 days without washing. I'll use dry shampoo every now and then if I need some lift. I get comments all the time that my hair smells great, and I chuckle because it'll have been a few days since I washed it.
I can't get my hair wet on the non wash days because it'll be a little oily if I do. Also I have naturally curly, very frizzy hair and prefer to wear it straight so getting it wet would mean I'd have to restyle it. My hair is waist length so straighten takes awhile.
I am so very happy to be out of the washing and styling every day routine. To be honest, I didn't believe my stylist about my oily hair changing, so glad I stuck it out though.

I think you have to miss more than a day or have an oiler than usual head to get dirty hair smell that quickly. I just put it up on the top of my head in a messy bun when showering and style it as usual. The only time I have ever washed my hair because it smelled was back in the day when I was hanging out in smoky bars.

Everything I read says it's takes a month to retrain your hair. I do wear my hair up at work so that's one nice thing to help me get through this. Thanks for the tips. I'm thrilled I'll have extra time in the mornings now!

I have a chin length bob and there is no way I could go without washing or at least getting it wet every day. I wake with the worst bedhead and there is no amount of dry shampoo that fixes it. It is too short to pull back in a pony tail or clip. I wish I would wash every other day but it ain't happening for me!

I don't dry shampoo - my hair really hates it and gets really dry and crunchy.
Day one hair is usually flat ironed or has a little bend in it. Day two hair is usually just brushed out with a little pomade or put up in a twist or ponytail. I think it is healthier for my hair if I don't re-iron my hair.
Occasionally if the third day is my day off work and I haven't been to the gym, I will braid the top and then put the rest in a twist at the back of my head and still not wash it.
Three days is about as long as I can go before it looks visibly dirty. Hence the braid.
I don't know this dirty hair smell people are talking about. I have literally never smelled it and wouldn't know what it was if I did. I know second-wear shirt smell where you can smell the deodorant residue on it. But I don't know the hair smell.

I'll turn 50 next month. I only wash my hair once a week, and I use baby shampoo, cheap conditioner, and a good leave in conditioner. The rest of the week I'll just wet it down when I shower. No one has ever mentioned a smell to me, but I also don't have a lot of grease due to my rather advanced age. (DD told me today that she admired my confidence for wearing a black shirt despite having so much grey hair. What a little darling, that one)

I think people with curly hair have a much easier time not shampooing every day because I've read it's already naturally drier. I have always had stick straight hair and I get terrible bed head so I do wash it daily just so it doesn't look like I just rolled out of bed. My DD has curly hair that I wash once or twice a week depending on what she's been doing. If I washed her hair every day it would be totally unmanageable. My hair starts to look like an oil slick about halfway through the second day if I don't wash it, and I can't stand how greasy my face and neck start to feel from my hair. I have a wash and go style, so it only takes me about five minutes to wash it and run a brush through it.

I shampoo every other day and condition daily. On the days I only condition my hair sometimes feels greasy by the end of the day.

I don't do any styling, so wet, wrap in a towel for a few minutes, comb and go. Weekends are good because I can wear a ball cap.

I wash every 3'days. I like my hair so much better on day 2 and day 3. It holds its style so much better. My advice is prepare for a transition period. You mr hair may rebel at first and produce more oil because it's used to being washed every day. Try to have a style that you can put it up on those days if it's not behaving.

I wash every other day and use a shower cap on day two. I work in healthcare and wear my hair pinned up or in a pony tail so I think that helps. Good luck.

My hairdresser who I trust her opinion would have me only wash my hair 2x week and dry wash it the other days if I had to. That isn't going to happen, but I would say I wash it 3x-4x week. Unless you are a sweat hog you are not going to have nasty smelling hair. You just aren't. You aren't in puberty and adult hair doesn't smell. Every other day is going to be fine. It really will be. It won't strip your hair of natural oils either. You know the kind that make it bright and shiny? It needs that to look good. I buy expensive shampoo that lasts me a year or longer. I have 2 big (huge!) bottles of salon shampoo my hairdresser uses and many salon bought conditoners (I am a sucker for buying the stuff) and I just rotate them to my needs. She won't sell me anything else until I start producing empty containers. I am getting mousse tomorrow though as I hate the gel I have. Go to every other day and your hair will thank you!

I wash every 3 days or so - have done for years. There is a bit of a transition, but it's much better for your hair not to be washing every day. I'm sure there won't be a smell unless you're running around and getting really sweaty - but the dry shampoo will come to your rescue if you need a bit of a touch up. Good luck!
