Several months ago I was complaining about it taking 4 to 6 weeks to be reimbursed for various things at work. The AP gal who does it calls out sick all the time, is generally very lazy and very protective of handling things via check and not implementing more efficient ACH procedures. I think she is skimming money based on her behavior. Plus she calls in hung over at least once a week. So anyway, I have a reimbursement out for the last 8 weeks! My boss asked me to go to a conference so I bought my plane ticket and turned in my expense report the same day. Yesterday, was 8 weeks. I had already paid my own credit card bill so i thought I would just let it ride and document how long it took since they are now doing write ups in an effort to fire her. Well last week I got a phone call from a collection agency. Apparently she hasn't paid the bill for a service that we use and I am the named contact. This service is vital to avoiding penalties with the IRS. It's really f*cking important. I was livid. Maybe even pea livid. I was out of town at said conference of course but checking my voice mail. If it didn't get paid by the end of the week they were going to shut us off! I fired off a lengthy, ranty email to our CEO, the VP of operations (her technical boss), our attorney and the Senior Accountant. I was pissed, embarrassed and couldn't believe that she can't even do her job and we keep her on staff. The CEO directed the Sr Accountant to log in to the invoice system and pay the bill to keep there service turned on. Once in there, they discovered that she was 2 months behind in paying the bill and soon to be 3 months behind. At the end of the email I mentioned that i had been waiting for 8 weeks for this reimbursement and would have another when I returned to the office on Monday. The CEO also ordered that my reimbursement check be cut immediately upon my return to the office with my previous report plus the expenses I incurred while out. So 8 weeks and 1 day later I got my check today. This whole thing is just unfreakingbelievable. How can anyone be that irresponsible and lack that much work ethic. And how can her supervisor just ignore this. Ugh.

Well....did she get in trouble?? Lol! And it's good you got paid! They were going to write her up. But I was out of town until yesterday so I don't know if they did or not! They are now collecting documentation in order to terminate her. Plus they recently moved some accountants around so that one would be in charge of this dept to provide more supervision. That change doesn't happen until next week though!

Hopefully her supervisor will be addressing it. I know the company I work for is slow paying things, but it is a cash flow issue - but paychecks and expense reimbursements are always paid and clear. I too am the contact for several subscriptions and get those "are you going to pay" calls...

Ours is definitely not a cash flow issue. She just doesn't do her job. Those phone calls are embarrassing! Hopefully it's the last one!

A place I temped at had fired their finance person as soon as I said I would take the position. He hadn't opened mail for two weeks before I started (mail was date stamped) and in the unopened mail was a termination notice for their dental insurance and a disconnection notice for their phones because the billhadnt been paid. It wasn't like there wasn't cash in the bank to pay them either. The executive director was PISSED! Expense reimbursements hadn't been paid to staff for two months. (There is a good any to make friends in your first week-hand out overdue money!) They terminated him because he was always slow about getting things done. Even with my needing to figure out on my own how he did the various tasks, I managed to get things caught up and had time to clean and organize the office, determining in less than a few weeks that the position did not require someone full time. I honestly can't figure out how he was there 40 hrs a week and be as far behind as he was. I figured I did more work in my first three days than he did in three weeks. In my busiest weeks since, when I had grant budgets due, I still only needed to put in about 25 hrs to get the work done.
I think part of his problem was serious disorganization. (I went through a full sheet of file folder labels in my organizing process). There where piles of stuff everywhere, and in file boxes I found even more piles with post its with where those piles came from: "bookshelf by desk" etc. I also wondered if he wasn't as up on QuickBooks as he had let on. He may have been lazy too, I don't know. But damn. He made it VERY easy for me to impress the folks there!

Sorry you are having that problem. What happened to that other job you were considering? Oh lordy! That was a situation! I guess I never updated the Peas. I accepted the offer and then turned in my notice to leave. My boss kinda freaked since we were short staffed in the hr dept and the new guy had just started. She told the CEO that there was no way she could make open enrollment or IRS reporting happen if I left. He authorized her to offer me more money to stay. So she asked me to put together a figure. So I did. And it was obscene. Really obscene! But I figured I didn't want to be haggling over a few thousand dollars. So I gave her my number. She and I met with the CEO and he asked if I would stay if he approved it. I said yes. And he said "done"! Now please stay! So I stayed and picked up a 35% salary increase. It was sweet!!! But when crap like this happens I think I should have just gone on to the other job!

That's excellent! Way to advocate for yourself! I'm glad your employers are finally taking the situation seriously with that woman.

Wow, eight weeks for reimbursement is crazy insane. You should charge your company interest for using your money.

It seems unfathomable to me that she can't just be fired.

It seems unfathomable to me that she can't just be fired. The main problem is that she has been there for 15 years and that she has never had a supervisor. Well she does but the VP of Operations doesn't like to deal with personnel issues and is mostly out of the office at various sites, etc. So she was just never dealt with. No a single write up or anything in her file. But with all the issues we have had over the last 6 mo. the VP is now giving disciplinary actions, etc. Once the accountant transfers over and becomes her direct supervisor I am betting she either finds a new job or is fired.

I predict she'll quit before she gets fired. People like that love being unsupervised. Once she has a supervisor I'm sure she'll hate the job and leave to find someplace else where she can slack off.

The company is wise to create a file of incompetent behaviors. Several years ago, my sister took over an office and fired someone who was incompetent. The unemployment people upheld "it was unfair" because the person had no bad reviews or paper trail in the file. "For 9 years she was OK, why did you fire her with no complaints in her file?" So, now a paper trail is developed before someone is let go.
