Crafty Ladies,
My baby daughter is my in-laws first and only grandchild and we just spent about a month staying with them so we have plenty of photos. I'd like to make a gift for them since they did a lot for us while we stayed with them. I can of course just make a photo book online for them, but I wonder if they would appreciate something a little more "scrappy"? When my daughter was first born, I made small mini-albums (consisted mainly of 2x3 photos with minimal stamping and no embellishments) which they seemed to like, but I always wonder if people really like to receive these types of things, or if they think it's a little weird, and would prefer a "regular" photobook instead?

It totally depends on the person/grandparents.
If they are madly in love with any photo of their grandchild, chances are that you could glue it tot he back of a cereal box and they'd be thrilled.
My mom doesn't like photos of my kids. Any of them. She says photos make her sad.
So what I'm saying, is gift the grands photos in whatever form you desire. If you want to make an ornate scrapbook, go for it. If you want to have a photo book printed, then that's the way to go.

My parents and in laws LOVE photos of the kids, always have. Whatever you put together is going to be well received, unless they're like the above poster's Mom. I made small brag books through a photo company, like Shutterfly or something, just because I had a coupon and they were small enough to carry in their purses/pockets. I'm sure that whatever you put together will be great. I think that some people appreciate the handmade aspect and, in most cases, people don't seem to care as much as we do. I'd go with what YOU feel you want to / have time for.

I learned for my family that they prefer the digital version of scrapbooking They can't appreciate the paper stuff.

Thanks for the input. The last thing I want to do is spend a bunch of time (which I don't have!) to make something and not have it be appreciated! I'll probably do a very simple photo mini album again with minimal embellishments.

My mom loves the photo books, because she can tuck it in her purse and show it off everywhere she goes.

Since you've said yourself you don't have a lot of time, I would go with the photobook option and keep the crafty surprise for a special occasion such as Christmas or Easter. You could make a mini scrap album that is more theme-centered (and thus smaller to make). Something like "All I want for Christmas is you" which could be about all your daughter loves about them/being with them. There is plenty of time to do this since she's only a baby. Just like the saying goes "Pick your fights", I also believe one should pick their scrappy projects. Not everything needs to be handmade. Just concentrate on the occasional smaller scrappy gift and use your energy (and lovely goodies) wisely.

My mom loves photos. But she isn't into scrapbooks with all the embellishments. She does enjoy smaller photo books for the same reason as the poster above, she can carry it around and show the kids off.
She also loves the 4x6 photo album that I just slid photos into. She also likes the digital photo frame, but I have to add photos to it every so often for her.

I make digital photo calendar for the grandparents and dh to take to work. As long as I make those every year everyone is happy! I keep it really simple but do tailor each one to the individual. I order the $10 ones from costco.

Persnickety Prints had a photo desk calendar that is cute & useful.
Artifact Uprising has a cute photo box that you can customize & give them a place to put photos. They also have a wooden block with prints that can be changed out.
Personally, I like the idea of a digital photo frame that can be updated with new pictures over time.

Thanks for the calendar reminders - last year I DIY-ed one for my BF very similar to the one Artifact Uprising sells. I will probably do a calendar for Xmas for the grandparents.
