On one thread scrapaddict702 mentioned that her husband was a horizontal photo-taker and I wondered what everyone else here did. I am mostly a horizontal photo-taker with a few vertical ones thrown in. Video is almost always horizontal. I feel unless I am purposely trying to not include something, I am missing out on the background when I do vertical. I dislike very much when someone uploads a video on youtube and it is taken in vertical mode. I don't like seeing the black sides. How about you? Photos? Video?

Most of my photos are taken horizontally but some get cropped vertically.

I taw a mixture. And I do a lot of cropping/using Photoshop templates when I scrap, so I can usually make things work.

I think my hubby is a horizontal photo taker because vertical video is a huge pet peeve for him. I was a horizontal photo taker but because of PL, I had to reprogram myself in order to make things easier on myself. I think if I explained that to him, he would aim for a variety but I didn't think too much about it until I considered using a 9x12 album to document the trip. I will keep it in mind for future vacations (ones that are longer than a weekend) and remind hubby, too.

I had a vertical phase that lasted quite a while. Until I realized I wanted some variety on my layouts. I made it a point to take more horizontal pictures and also crop some pictures into squares.

I intentionally try to take a mix of both, and I also try to leave a bit of "breathing room" around my subject so if I decide later that a horizontal absolutely *needs* to be cropped vertically, I can at least try that.

I do both depending on the subject but think I probably take more horizontal than vertical, even with my phone.

I take both of most shots. Most people I know (who purchase kits) take horizontal shots.

50/50. I shoot what compliments the photo, and for a lot of people shots, that's vertical.

I'd say I take a good mix of the 2.

Like several of you, I shoot whatever compliments the subject the best.

I find I'm usually vertical when it comes to making a layout, so I shoot more vertical photos.

When I sold my camera and only used my phone for photos, I would say mostly vertical. And now that I am adding PL to my scrapbooking, I use mainly vertical or square photos. But I too will turn the camera/phone to horizontal if the subject matter needs it. Like at my 2 yr old nephew's birthday and his 15 cousins were lined up in a row behind him.

I don't know why, but with a camera I tend to take vertical shots, but with my phone I do more horizontal ones. I guess that would be ok if I ever actually used a real camera.
I do a lot of squares too.

I take mostly 'landscape' or 'scenery' type photos, so mine are mostly horizontal.
If the subject lends itself to a vertical orientation (a tower on a church, or I'm looking up at something that IS vertical, for example), I'll take a vertical photo to emphasize the vertical lines of the object, or to get the entire thing in the picture, lol!
Also, if I remember to, every once in a while I try to take a few horizontal AND vertical photos of the same thing, to give myself a couple photo options to choose from for page layouts when I'm scrapping. If I decide the subject of the photo is something that doesn't need the background included, I'll try and use the vertical photo (or crop it into a square) just to 'mix it up' a bit on my scrapbook pages.

I think my hubby is a horizontal photo taker because vertical video is a huge pet peeve for him. He and I think alike. When I sold my camera and only used my phone for photos, I would say mostly vertical. I think a good percentage of people take vertical because of their phone. My friend went on vacation and I told her to send me some photos. Every one was vertical. I said horizontal! Send me horizontal! She sent me a picture of a parking lot. Oh well. This. Exactly!

I purposely take both because I never know what I'll need for my layout.

These days it would vertical as the photos I use come off my phone but if it is older photos of the kids when they were babies or our holiday/camping photos they are more horizontal with a few vertical as they were/are taken with an actual camera.

Huh. I never gave it much thought before.
I do a mixture of both. Usually whatever orientation best captures the scene/subject that I'm trying to capture.
I just make my layouts work around my photos.

I take a lot of vertical photos, I am usually trying to minimize toys all over the floor in the background of my photos...

My first thought was that I take more horizontal, but I scrolled through my phone and it's pretty much a mix based on subject and what I think will suit it best. I like the idea of taking both of the same subject, though. I will have to try that.

I take a lot of both. I don't want all of my pages to end up looking alike, so I make sure to mix it up.
DH is a portrait taker. I have to remind him to turn it once in a while.

I find myself more and more taking photos for Instagram. Although my phone lets me choose the square option, I like to sometimes take photos in the vertical format (generally I take both horizontal and vertical) because I'm finding more and more that scenery photos often look best with more sky or more ground. Horizontal photos don't really do that, so I take several photos so I can see if the finished posting in Instagram needs a little more top or bottom. Also, since I'm a multi-photo scrapper, I do like a variety of formats for my layouts. Here's an example: The center photo in the layout, for example, was taken vertical format, then I later edited it for Instagram, leaving lots of road and treetops, which I would have missed in horizontal.
