Yes, I've lost my mind. I bought an Annalee green posable elf at T J Maxx the other day for $7.99 I've been too cheap to buy the Elf on the Shelf kit for $30. And my elf will be a well behaved, kind elf. Mama isn't tolerating any of that write-with-toothpaste-on-the-mirror, or dust-the-room-with-flour-to-make-snow-angels bullcrap. I'm thinking my elf will bring small treats to the family, and happy notes. Is it too early to be thinking about Christmas?

(Actually, I've already bought several presents)

Yds watched the Elf movie yesterday so he thinks its Christmas already (he also watched it in June, so he's a bit unreliable).
Enjoy your elf!

I have the taller Annalee elf that's dressed in white with tinsel at the wrists and ankles. I usually hang him from the chandelier or the china cabinet or Christmas tree. I've had him since before the Elf on the Shelf got popular.
I like your plan for the treats and notes.

Oh the elf! It will be fun.
We didn't have one for a very long time and I actually thought the idea of it was pretty dumb especially the over the top, elf makes a mess ideas. My oldest son was very serious and said that he knew it was just a stuffed animal (age 4 or 5 at the time) and didn't get the whole magic of it. He is my kid that doesn't love surprises etc.
Well my younger son really loved the idea when he was about 4 and the oldest was 9. So my mom got him one for his birthday which is the week of Thanksgiving. He loves "Elfie" so much. He loves the funny things he does and waking up to see him every morning. Oldest son has fun with it too and he is my little helper incase I forget. I never imagined we would have one in the house, but we do. It is one part of the holidays I don't mind too much. lol.
And no, I am not ready for Christmas. I haven't even decorated for Fall or Halloween yet.

We have fun with our elf. DD aged, as children tend to do, and now she joins in elfing fun. You are right to start with notes and happies....but your child will probably hear of all the funny pranks by other elves and beg him or her to do something funny. It's hard to resist that.
Our elf has always been slightly mischievous. Never anything harmful, but he's been known to get into our candy stash and take naps in the freezer. He has a few ornament sized friends who help him out, and he has a little rivalry with Stitch. Oh, and his nemesis is the tooth fairy. He took her down the night she tried to "steal" Alison's tooth. The fairy got away with the tooth, but not before she spilled fairy dust, coins, and sugar free gum (in a limited area so it was easy to clean).

I will have to go look for one of those! I've been wanting another elf to join in the fun, but don't want to dish out another $30 for a second one. The kids get a kick out of our Elf's antics. He does some naughty stuff, but nothing too out there and nothing that is hard to clean up afterward. He bungee jumped from our tree, zip lined through our Christmas village and took "selfies" with YDS camera. All in good fun. I don't do the whole "he loses his magic" if you touch him thing though. That was panicking my kids if the cat knocked him over or something. They know we don't play with him, BUT if he falls they can pick him up and put him back. Holidays can be stressful enough, don't need them being stressed over touching a toy elf.

We have a small elf that comes to our house the day after Thanksgiving. We named him Twinkie. He is actually a Christmas ornament that Hallmark came out with years ago. He is adorable. He is not poseable. We do not have our elf do zaney antics in our home. He shows up, maybe brings a small treat for the kids, and then moves around the house every day. The kids wake up, and it's a fun game to see where Twinkie moved to during the night. Like hide and go seek. Thats it. Easy. Twinkie gets picked up by Santa after he visits our house on Christmas Eve.

We never bought an "ELF". We bought a barbie with pink strawberry hair...her hair still smells like that till this day. She is almost 17 years old. Her name is Joy, we made several outfits, she has accessories. ..she is a diva & a bad elf. My girls love explaining why Joy is not a typical elf...she has a backstory.

Our Elf on the Shelf is an Annalee elf too. DD loves her and even though she now knows the elf isn't "real" she looks forward to the appearance of out elf every year. We celebrate St Nick's day on Dec. 6th and our elf hitches a ride with St. Nick. When DD was little, this led her to believe that St. Nick and Santa are brothers.

Welcome to the madness! I think we have about 6-7 of them now, compliments of my friend (DD's 'adopted' gramma) who keeps finding new ones for us every year, LOL. None of ours are naughty, I don't allow it in our house. But they do cute things and fill the Advent calendar doors every night. I don't think our 6 year old thinks they're real anymore but she plays along because it's just fun.

Actually, I've already bought several presents *whispers* So have I. You are right to start with notes and happies....but your child will probably hear of all the funny pranks by other elves and beg him or her to do something funny. Hahaha, I bought the elf to add extra magic to the season because my teenager has been lamenting that she only has two years left until she is an adult and she needs to squeeze all the fun out of her childhood that she can. My elf will not be a trouble maker. Any trouble and it will be shipped back off to the North Pole!

That said, our pranks increased when DD(a week shy of 14) realized SHE could have fun surprising ME with the elf! I won't even tell you about the compromising position I caught Flynn and Barbie in! Save

Aw, I love those Annalee figures. Have fun with your well-behaved elf. Well-behaved elves are my favorites.
