After retiring from teaching in June I was asked by an IU (a state funded education entity located 50 miles from my home) to work as a transition counselor for adult ed. classes in our part of the state. I service around a dozen classes that are in about a hundred mile radius from where I live.
The counseling is done in group and individual sessions and is all done via Google Hangout (similar to Skype). The one stipulation is I can't work from home. I find this to be a bit weird but I have a workspace at our public library and I'm fine working from there.
The problem is that one class that I work with meets on Thursday evening and our library closes early on that day. So the IU wants me to drive 15 miles to the next town over to work from that library. I think that is stupid since I have a home office I could do the exact same thing from. I am not paid for mileage or travel time. So I am driving on my own time, in my own car 15 miles in one direction to communicate via the internet with students who are actually 65 miles in the opposite direction.
Edited because I hit post before I was done... this is basically just a rant. I understand that the company can set policy as it sees fit. I am just kind of pissy about it because on the one hand they want to embrace technology, yet a decision like this is made that is not in line with that ideology. (And I don't want to drive on snow covered roads in the dark during winter cuz I'm old and crotchety and hate driving at night.)

I wonder if it's because of privacy/safety considerations?
As for the driving on your own time and mileage thing, well, that's what most people working out of an office have to do, so no big deal to me.

I'm assuming that you retired because you are of retirement age. Say that your night vision isn't what it used to be and that driving on dark country roads/dark city streets isn't comfortable for you. You may get them to change the policy. Or they may tell you no, go to the next town over. Either way, you tried.

I guess I don't understand why online counselling from a library is better than at home. Surely it is a less private place to work? Even having paperwork with people's details on, out in a public place, would be a no-no for any organisation I've worked for.
I would talk to them about it, espcially the driving at night in winter. It doesn't hurt to ask, right?

I'm with you. It seems ridiculous.

Policies always exist for a reason. At some point they may have allowed it from home but had the person at home doing something inappropriate like kids/pets/spouse wandering through during the session, the person working not dressing appropriately for being on the job or doing something sexually inappropriate. So they want the person working in a more public setting where there is less likely to be a problem from the person in your position.
As for driving at night.. didn't they discuss this before you took the job? No one gets milage for their work commute. You didn't when you were teaching.
eta: Telecommute does not equal work from home. They don't want you working from home. You knew that before taking the job. So I think this is a suck it up butter cup or bow out of the job. Maybe see if you can work something out with your library or find a different public venue in your community to suggest.
