I don't sew!! and I don't want to buy a cheesy $30 costume... I am searching for ideas how to achieve this. She picked Laura Ingalls to be her historical character for school and has to dress up like them. I was GIDDY at first but then reality hit.
I'm gonna hit the thrift stores but that is going to be just luck!!
Anyone have any ideas? Or better yet, one I could borrow short term? (yeah that is a stretch!)
Oh by the way, I am totally limited on what I can do by hand, currently I am sporting a purple cast on my right hand.

Go to the thrift store and find a dress with ruffles. There are lots of those ruffled, flounced dresses at ours. Put her hair in braids and send her ouch in a little metal bucket (hardware store.). Done!

You can make the bonnet out of a white paper lunch sack. Just cut one side off and roll the open end up a few times. Add an apron to a long dress or skirt.

Our kids go to a historical home & have to dress up like pioneers for a field trip. Some buy the bonnets/dresses on ebay/etsy. There is also a costume rental (several of them) that rent out pioneer costumes.

Could you make a white apron thing-y (whatever they wore over their dresses) out of a big piece of felt? No sewing needed.

I made an apron out of a white curtain I found at Good Will... I ran a large ribbon through the tunnel for the curtain bar if that makes sense. It was perfect.
It was like a cafe curtain.
Find a flowered skirt at good will, look in the adult section and pin it if necessary you can get more "old fashioned looking" and the right length.

Do you belong to a local Facebook classifieds group? Are there many Mormons in your area? The youth (ages 14-18) go on Trek trips in the summer and have to dress up as pioneers. I know she's 8, but if you post a ISO post, you might find something. My 16 year old niece is only 4'9". You can always safety pin things too.

You can use a flannel nightgown as the dress and tie on a white apron. Braid her hair and foregoing the bonnet.
In 3rd grade my DD had to dress like a pioneer. She found s pattern online for making a bonnet that was really easy. She did it entirely herself (I helped her lay out the fabric and showed her how to pin but it was easy enough that she could do it herself, hand sewing ).

Flannel nightgown and plain white apron from Michaels (on sale regularly or just a couple of $ with a coupon) were going to be my sugestions. Hair in braids and I love the pail lunchbox idea suggested by Basket1lady .

Yes... I forgot to mention the metal pail lunchbox...perfect!!! I think if one of the two posters that were asking about sizes fall through, I'll just order the one from Amazon. Braids is also an awesome idea.. That will be a difficult task because DD HATES her hair brushed to begin with.. lol... but I think I can get it done. Thankfully we have boots, not exactly what they wore but close enough. Thanks ladies for all the suggestions.

My daughter has a dress I sewed for her for pioneer days last year and a bonnet she refused to wear.it might be just a tad big. I'll talk to her tonight to see if I she is ok with me sending to you. I can send you a picture if you want.

I don't sew either but anytime I've had a project that may need sewing I've managed to cut out and either duct tape the seams on the inside (if it waas that morning, for example, headed out the door type of thing) or my sister turned me onto the iron on stuff that you can use as well. (Stitch Witchery or Heat N Bond). If that helps!

I am so glad DS' school never did these types of things. I am not creative and didn't have the money to spend on things like this.

It is VERY rare we have to do this..in fact it's the first time (I have two older kids)...so counting my blessings. Some of the other suggestions won't work cause I can't cut either (cut, write, button my pants..lol)...I can't wait till this cast is off!!

I dug it and it will be too small. It was an small child pattern and I had altered it to fit around her non existent waist and boobs.
Sorry
