We are selling an atv. I got a text asking me to email further details. No biggie, some people don't have free texting.
Then, I got a reply email saying to take the atv off of craigslist, the buyer wants it based on the pictures and description, etc. I just need to send the buyer my name and address, they'll overnight me a blank check, and their "shipper" will pick up the atv as soon as the funds clear. They will also pay me a "holding" fee of $10 a day until the shipper gets here. I'm to put the final amount on the check.
I looked up the number and it's from Chula Vista, CA with no name attached to it.
Dh is insistent that a bill of sale be completed for tax purposes, their response was "go ahead and put some name on it, we won't tell".
No warm, fuzzy feeling so I'm not going to respond. I've never heard of this situation before.
Now, I'm sorta wishing that I hadn't turned down the guy offering to trade a cow.

Yes it's a scam. The blank check they will send you is going to bounce.

Oh that is so a scam. I'd just email him back and tell him when he shows up in person with cash in hand he can have the atv, until then it stays listed.

Yup, should have gone with the cow. Those are selling for more than $3/lb on the hoof around here so if it's a big cow, then it could have been a pretty nice offer. And hey, prime rib!

Big time scam. I've sold items on Craigslist and can't even tell you how many times I've received emails like that. Scumbags.

Yep. They will use you depositing the check to obtain your bank account information and bleed your account dry.

Dh says I should string them along, I'm like "who really has time for that?" I'm busy trying to teach algebra to a cranky 13 year old!

They will tell you they sent too much money and ask you to mail a check for the difference. However your bank doesn't tell you their check bounced until 2 weeks later.

We were listing a classic truck on Craigslist and the bad grammar just jumped out at me. DH was convinced I was stalling the sale. He was not convinced it was a scam.

Yep. They will use you depositing the check to obtain your bank account information and bleed your account dry. So you think anyone you deposit a check from has access to your account? I don't think that's how it works.

Your first clue, and the only one you need, is "I'll send you a blank check".

My shebang thought he was being scammed on Craigslist, so he pasted part of the letter onto Google and there were a ton of hits for the scam.
ETA: Not sure why husband turned into shebang, but I kind of like it.
