I find the whole Texas Homecoming Mum thing very fascinating! Are flowers for Homecoming a thing elsewhere? Smaller, traditional mum corsages? Regular prom type corsages/boutineres? Or no flowers? I get nothing but shrugs from my sophomore when I ask about anything homecoming related...

Corsages, yes (IL/IA anyway), but not the giant TX mums I see talked about here.

Homecoming mums are very specifically a Texas thing. I do believe in recent years Oklahoma has picked up the tradition as well.

Not at all here. I'd never heard of (or seen) anything like the "mums" people post on this board. Homecoming is spirit week with silly themes each day, football game, and a dance -although no one dances;). Some girls wear small real flower corsages to the dance, but corsages are no longer in vogue, it seems. This is a huge HS with an ostentatious prom, though, so they make up for it.

I don't think they do flowers for homecoming here. I only see them for prom (mostly wrist corsages)

I don't think there's a homecoming dance here - just spirit week, a pep rally, parade, and the ALL IMPORTANT football game (Florida)

They're a thing in Alabama, but usually not nearly as large as the ones in TX.

I grew up in Ohio. We had a "real" mum at homecoming. It was small and a real flower.
I live in Houston area, and have a teenage daughter. The mum thing here is like nothing I've ever seen before!

I grew up in central Louisiana and normal boutineers and wrist corsages were what we had. I have some high school friends that remained within the state but ended up closer to the Texas border and I see some of their kids with the large homecoming mum corsages. ETA: I just now remembered that our homecoming court had actual large mum corsages but they weren't the huge things trailing with ribbons I see in Texas. They were just a large mum with our high school letters made out of pipecleaners attached to the front.

In Texas (at least here in Houston area), they do the boutonnieres & wrist corsages for the homecoming dance. The mums & garters are worn to school on the day of the homecoming game, and then to the game that night.

The girls here still get small wrist corsages. Thank goodness we haven't gotten on the huge mum bandwagon! I have seen some homecoming and prom-posals in nearby towns. I'd like to decline those as well.

I had never seen them anywhere we've lived before we moved to Texas, and I doubt I'll see them much outside of Texas now. They are pretty big business there though .
