I hear people talking a lot about planners. What is the point decorating them? Don't they just get tossed after the year is over? I never had a planner. If I had to remember something it went on my wall calendar.

I'm glad you asked. I have had the same question but felt too intimidated to ask!

My planners are leather binders that you definitely don't throw out. I use mine to journal in all the time so I won't be throwing them out. As for an Erin Condren one that you decorated I don't know what you do with it after the year is done. That one I am not sure about.

I have a few friends that keep them! They use them as a basic record keeping method /journaling reminder thing. Me, not so much

While I don't highly decorate my yearly planner I do keep them to use as a reference when I am scrapbooking. Pretty easy to go back and look up when things took place.

I use mine as a journaling prompt for Project Life. Im pretty bad about keeping up with it daily. I usually fill it out once every week or so. Obviously the longer i go the harder it is to remember. Sometimes i do a little decorating just for fun and to be creative while i'm slogging through my calendar, photos and social media trying to piece together the days. I'm a wannabe diarist but my consistency is shit.

If I had to remember something it went on my wall calendar. Why do people scrapbook? As much as we like to believe our families will treasure and keep our works of art forever, they will most likely end up in a dusty attic somewhere--or more likely--the trash. It's much more logical to keep your photos and journaling organized on your computer and backed up in several places. People scrap for the process as much as the end product. It's a hobby. It's fun. I decorate my planner for the same reason. It makes me happy. It helps me relax. I choose colors and design elements--I decorate and embellish. It's FUN. It's the same as scrapbooking, except I have no illusions about my family keeping my planners after I'm gone. (Sorry for the defensiveness. I feel the same way I felt when people used to question why I scrapped...)

I carry a Filofax planner, and if it happens in my world, it goes into my planner. But my planner is with me in the car - always.
I dont decorate mine much. I *do* use washi tape when marking when my boys will be gone, when DH is gone on business, etc. Every person in my family has their own tape and I can glance at what tape is being used and know who is gone or has something going on. It works for me.
I don't add lots of extra stuff though. If its being used, then its something I need to notice.

Not everyone who use a planner decorate their pages (I might do it on my monthly overview, a cat sticker for when I'm cat-sitting or a horse sticker for when DD has a horse riding lesson, just makes it easier to see what we are doing that day). For others it's a creative outlet...much like scrapbooking. ETA: I don't use an Erin Condren-style planner, but ringed planners (like the Filofax, although I prefer Gillios or custom made van der Speks ) or Midori type planners (I change my setup occasionally).

I buy the stickers and stuff but don't do it. I know I should. I am just not motivated to do it. I need to get with the program. I do like Cocoa Daisy's inserts, though, and do write lots on them. My Erin Condren inserts just don't get used all that often.

Recently, they have started to offer both Midori-type and Hobonichi-type covers. Van der Spek makes completely costum made planners (even more costumisable than their webshop suggests), while Gillio offers ready-made planners, but in limited quantities. Both are based in the EU (and make their planners there, not in India or China), but will ship worldwide. Gillio also makes purses, wallets, bags and other leather items. And both brands are very high quality.

The colours you can choose are amazing. Do you carry one? I love that their are made in the EU. I love that fact! It's so European and posh sounding!

LV planners are not that great quality. They aren't bad by any means but they are no better than Filofax but they are better than Kikki K in my opinion. Kikki K lose their gold colour if you get a printed one. Filofax leather is very nice. LV is just canvas and while it is nice and posh, it isn't leather. I use it for my gratitude journal and i just keep it in its dust bag and take it out to add pages I have journaled on. It's only a Personal size not at A5 (MM not a GM) and it isn't big enough for my needs. It is nice, though.

Kikki K has gone downhill the last year, and their quality wasn't impressive to begin with (especially not the ring mechanism). The only problem with Gillio and vdS is that if you try them, there is no going back to cheaper planners (and that can get expensive fast).

I stopped scrapping quite a while ago, but I still like looking at, and playing with, pretty things. I love getting up in the morning, opening my planner and looking at something pretty and fun. Every once in a while I'll flip back thru my planner and just stare at the fun pages. A lot of people use one as a way to scrapbook, adding photos. People also use one to journal. There's lots of different uses and reasons to decorate a planner. I started decorating a planner this past January, and I didn't know if I'd get tired of it or not. But here we are, end of October, and I'm still going strong. Except for a week in late Spring when I was really sick, every single week is decorated. And I love it. It's my little crafty escape.

The only problem with Gillio and vdS is that if you try them, there is no going back to cheaper planners (and that can get expensive fast). I am sure Filofax leather and Gillio aren't even close. I got a good Filofax (work discount) for $50 and Gillio is 300 Euros. That isn't in the same ballpark. Kikki K has gone totally downhill, too. I have some older ones and they are so much better made. My newer ones are really poor quality. Gillio leather is stunning. Do you order from Belgium or do they have a brick and mortar store near you? They sure are nice. How do you protect your wallet from getting beat up in your purse? If the leather is that soft I would think it might get damaged easily. My LV one is nice and it's very special to me because in it is all the good things in my life. That to me makes it very important, but it never leaves the house. It never sees daylight and it is covered at all times. What do you use for inserts? I got some printed by a couple of Etsy shops and I love what I had made. They are really nice. I had some printed at work which were great, too. I get Coco Daisy's kit, but I am kind of ticked off as they don't provide a whole month's worth of inserts to write on and I think November will be the last month I use them.

I order from their website, but I visited their store last time I was in Brussels. I don't baby my planners, so I just throw it in my purse. If it gets scratches, you can just rub them out (the epoca leather is nothing short of amazing). i actually use the cocoa Daisy inserts for my planning, with a monthly overview I make myself and a yearly overview from Pembrooke papers on etsy. I have used yellow paper house inserts previously, but I like the fun colours and designs of cocoa Daisy.

Link me to Pembrooke Papers. I would like to see their stuff.
I like Cocoa Daisy but they don't provide inserts until the end of the month if the month begins on a Tuesday. I am always a week or so short. The foxes for November are so cute. I loved the August kit the best though! I adore the puffy stickers!
I didn't know that about the leather. That is very cool! I may need one at some point.

I don't decorate mine. I bought it more as an organizing tool and don't use the calendar. I have another calendar I keep at home. I do keep that every year. You'd be surprised how often I refer to old calendars, for scrapbooking or checking how long ago something happened.
I chose a pretty pink planner with the Reset Girl inserts, because it makes me happy.

I like a paper calendar and a paper planner. I use my phone, too, as I don't carry my planner with me. (It's too big for my purse). I do write everything down though. I even make notes about other people in the family i.e. my dad going out for dinner with the guys or DS' birthday party on Friday night.
