What do I do for it? Move it, not move it, heat, ice? Is there anything that helps?

Tylenol and some Oreo cookies dunked in milk always helps me feel better.

When did you get your flu shot? Usually, for me, the second day is the most uncomfortable.
I would say like the previous poster Tylenol or Ibuprofen. I would think maybe an ice pack could help, but I've not ever had to use one.
Sorry your arm hurts! (But the flu would be much worse!)

moving your arm right after getting the shot helps the stuff to get distributed, I think... even though it hurts.
thanks for reminding me; I need to get a flu shot; forgot to last year.

We got ours last night and then I took the kids straight to Friendly's. By the time the food came, my 6 year old was sobbing in pain. My 11 year old mentioned that his hurt pretty bad too on the way home. By bedtime, my was hurting pretty badly. It's still uncomfortable now. It's definitely more painful this year than it has been in the past.

Not much you can do - moving it around more will help it go away faster (IMO) but generally it will be sore for 2 or 3 days.

I got mine on Tuesday and it still hurts. This one was killer this year. Maybe I am more run down than usual but I was wildly achy and my arm throbs after it. I have been taking Advil and it helps a bit.

My husband and I got our flu shots 2 weeks ago and for some reason this was the most pain free ever for both of us. Usually the arm pain for 3 or 4 days after is awful but not this year. We both received the high dose shot. Shrug... I don't know why.

We had a pharmacist tell use several years ago that if you tense your arm, you are going to have arm pain. She made sure we were super relaxed before giving the shot. Works like a charm. NO pain! I goofed this year, and was having so much fun chatting with our newest pharmacist that I forgot. Tensed my arm (she didn't remind me because maybe she didn't know the trick), and my arm hurt a bit this year. Nothing terrible. My shingles shot was horrific though. Had a terrible reaction that lasted a week!

Most years mine have hurt. This year the nurse told me to move my arm right away and to keep moving it and it wouldn't hurt as bad. My arm is not sore at all. Typically I do take Advil but I didn't need to use it this year.

Years ago after my doctor gave me a flu shot he rubbed the injection area afterwards, which seemed to help. And I've read that getting it in your dominant arm can be a good idea because you move it more. I also agree about being sure not to tense the muscles when you get it.
The pharmacist this year made sure my arm was relaxed. The injection was nearly painless. I did have some soreness but most of that was a couple days later.

DH and I received ours last weekend. I just asked if his arm hurt after and he said yes for about 24 hours. I didn't have any pain at all.

Since a coworker nurse told me last year that moving the arm around and massaging the injection site right after the shot and for the rest of the day helps diminish the pain, that's what I've done the last two years with nearly pain-free results. The feeling of general malaise for a day or two after this year's shot seems to be a very common complaint, and one both my DH and I had.

Move it and massage it. You can ice it if you need to. Don't apply heat, that increases inflammation. I give flu shots every day I work.

I have to get a shingles shot and I am in no hurry to do it. I had chicken pox so severely as a child that I was hospitalized. I was chatting with my doctor and relayed the story to him while asking if I should be concerned about shingles. He recommended that I get the shingles vaccination after my trip to Africa. Now I am wondering if I should wait until the day before Thanksgiving so I will have a long weekend to recover if need be. SaveSave

As a medical professional, I can confirm that oreos and ice cream are the appropriate treatment for anything!
Hope it feels better soon.

I have worked with the same group of nurses for 12 years and we have never complained about arm pain after our flu shots. This year we have been the whiniest group ever. It's really painful for some reason and starts hurting just a couple hours after the shot.

I read a friend on FB complaining about not being able to move her arm, so I was nervous. I had no pain at all. So strange how different it is for different people. The nurse who gave it to me said she got her shot in her right arm because she's right-handed and knew she would use/move around that arm a lot, and as others have said, that lessens the pain. I took her advice and it seems to have worked!

The soreness lasted a week with a lot of redness around the area. Hope that means its powerful and will keep the flu away. I don't remember any problem with the shingles vaccine.

I get the same pain, swelling and hot bump every year. I just push through it. It goes away after a few days.

LOL! Heck I used to have to give myself shots. Anyway, it's just the way I hold my arm that it can even be a bit tense. I have to hang it down and REALLY relax it. Works like a charm (when I remember to do it).

bay63 and tincin, I have never, ever had a reaction to meds or injections. However, I got a knot the size of my palm with the shingles vaccine. It was red, hard, swollen, and itched terribly. It also hurt. It happened 28 hours AFTER I got the injection. It then lasted a week. When it first started I felt like I could live with it but then it got worse over the next 3 days. It was horrible. The doctor had me take Benadryl and use cortisone. The Benadryl did nothing but put me to sleep so I quit taking that. The cortisone helped some but not much. She told me if a booster is ever needed, I probably need to skip the booster. I think most people do fine with it but my body did not like it. I had the chicken pox twice as a kiddo.

I get weekly injections of B12 in the shoulder (with a larger needle and B12 is thicker) and I don't have pain or soreness. I make an effort to relax my entire shoulder before the jab.

The flu shot usually sends me into a flare of my fibromyalgia. This year I got the higher dose shot, and a stronger flare. I may still be suffering with that, almost 2 weeks later, but I'm thinking it is something else at this point (which is a fun game to play with me... what's wrong now?) I have to get the Shingles vaccine soon, and am totally not looking forward to it. Don't know if i should do it now with Thanksgiving so close, wait til just after Thanksgiving, or wait til after Christmas.
