Since people here know EVERYTHING in the scrap world, I want to find out about something.
Paper wizard makes those incredibly complex and beautiful die cuts. They have all kinds of Disney, Harry Potter, you name it. They do not have any military die cuts like Army, etc. www.paperwiz.net/
So I asked at CKC why they don't have military die cuts. The guy told me those military ones are provided solely to a company called Uniform Scrapbooking of America and must be purchased through them.
So I try to contact them. They are out of business. Scrapbooks.com sells some of their items but not diecuts from Paper Wizard. so I contact Paper Wizard and I say, "I can't find these military die cuts from Uniform Scrapbooking of America" and I get a response that they are out of business. So I ask well will you sell them now and the response is that those are licensed.
The Armed Forces are licensed? Meaning you can't make a die cut that says Army, but you can make one that says Buzz Lightyear?
I have purchased other military diecuts but Paper Wizards are like works of art. So who knows the scoop on this? Why would Paper Wizard tell me to get die cuts from a company that handles their military die cuts exclusively but is out of business? What's up with that?

Disney is licensed too. They must have a licensing agreement with Disney but not the Armed Forces. Until they make that agreement they can not profit off the sale of the protected images/phrases. Edit: Actually after looking at the actual designs they have creatively worded things and altered images so that they are not using licenced disney images/phrases (ie "Terror in the Tower" instead of "Tower of Terror") either they don't have the desire to create similar military designs or they don't think it is worth it.

K&Co used to have an entire line of official military papers, albums, embellishments, etc.

Funny. I had to go look after the above statement -- and the store looks like it it skating a pretty thin line! Apparently they are confident that they haven't crossed the copyright line!

Not sure how they are getting away with that, unless they have a license with Disney.

I am guessing that it is not the names (army, navy, etc) that are licensed but the particular scrapbook designs are licensed. That the problem is paper wizard does not own the designs the other company owns them. Even if the company is no longer open, they stll own them.
An analogy would be no one owns the alphabet, but they can own the font designs. Does this make sense?

Too bad because they are so elaborate. I agree they are pretty close to the line if not over it on many designs IMO.

I think it is actually that the military branches themselves license their brand. I work retail and we merchandise military items in with our other licensed items, so I don't think it's specific to the designs. I could be totally wrong about it, but those are my two cents!
