That's interesting. Approximately 270,000 people share my last name, including 182,000 in the US, 1500 in Papua New Guinea and 1 in Botswana!

Hmmm.. I question the accuracy.
My maiden name is not terribly common, so I put that in. 1714 people in the world have that name, most common in Haiti. I am sure the Haitians with that last name have it from another origin. It was actually a name that was spelled incorrectly by US immigration. A u with an umlaut was converted to an o for some family members and an a for others. It lists one person in Scotland as having the name. I know there is a family (cousins) that live outside of London, but not Scotland. They list 101 people in Italy. I also suspect that is from another origin of the name, but I do remember my parents telling us that they found a deli owned by someone with the same last name in Italy once... which might mean that it is another branch of the family... or not. We are Jewish and when I hear "deli," I think Jewish delicatessen. LOL
Anyway, I do suspect that they 204 they indicate for the US are all cousins.
When I looked at the alternative spelling, with the a instead of the o, there are only 107 people.
ETA. Well that was interesting. I zoomed in on the map for my state and it shows the counties. There were more people in my original hometown county with my last name than I know. So, I searched a little more and found a family with my maiden name that I don't actually know of. Weird, because I can pretty much identify most of the other people with that name in my state and a neighboring state.

Mine is 496,593rd most common. 481 people in the world have this name. 409 in the US, 59 in New Zealand, 11 in Australia, 1 each in England & Mexico. Interestingly my dad was on a submarine in the late 50's that went to NZ & Australia. He was with a host family in one of those two who had the same last name. It was the first time he ever met anyone that wasn't a relative. I searched Facebook once and found a man that is a distant cousin. He sent me a copy of a book that was in his town's library that was written and published in the early 1920's and is a history of my dad's family starting in the late 1700's.

How cool is this! My maiden name there are roughly 4500 people with it (mostly in my state and our country of origin) & the history/background is as expected. My married name has 234 people with it & history/origin are unknown (also as expected). My ILs have tried to find the origin for years & came up empty.
