They still seem to think it's just halloween and everyone is in costume. It's ok, because it wasn't a real lynching...just pretend.

Someone should post this article on her page. Even if you don't understand the significance of blackface, Julianne Hough didn't, you can at least comprehend that a noose around someone's neck is suggesting violence and death to an entire race.

private left the building the second they posted it on facebook. it has now become public information and i see it as a threat of violence. If you do not what the public to see something then don't post it on a public form. If he was in one of my kids school i would be calling as soon as i could. A lot of school has a code of conduct.

Yea, I'd never be able to stomach their pizza again. I'd always see that image every time and it's sickening. Who thinks it's fine to act that out Halloween or otherwise AND then puts it in FB? Geez Steph hope you can avoid the drama and fallout that comes from that. Holy moly I'm just hoping it doesn't cause drama at school. Unlikely there will be raceissues there due to a 99% white population but who knows who may show up. Fingers crossed.

Whatever came about with that project that your son was having problems with. I missed the update. If people say that racism still doesn't exist, they are crazy!

Many many years ago now, in a town a couple counties from the one in which I grew up, a bunch of hillbilly friends threw a party. In a drunken stupor that night two men joked to a third that they should take him outside and burn him on a cross. It was a racial joke born out of clueless ignorance and that third man ended up dead that night - beheaded and set on fire. The man who died was named Garnett Johnson and he was black, and the ones who killed him were white. I didn't and don't necessarily consider it a hate crime or a fundamentally racist act because I understand the men to have been friends, but this was the unfortunate and terribly tragic extreme result of simple stupid jokes made out of clueless ignorance. This is one reason I think words matter and there is no such thing as harmless ignorance. Ignorance is very serious.

I agree that calling the police is OTT, but taking issue with your phrase "just clueless ignorance" because like "just locker room talk" the "just" diminishes the seriousness of the attitudes displayed.

Good point. Really my words were only in response to calling the police about the costume. That's the only reason I said it was only clueless ignorance, not illegal.

I ran with a broad, liberal and artistic crowd in college a gazillion years ago. There were Eva Braun and Hitler couple costumes (post suicide) plus other questionable statements. Not by me, I was boring, but by 20-something students. None of those would be considered now in this more enlightened or sensitive time. I can see how social media could tame some of the most out landish choices.
But even back in the dark ages, late 70s, early 80s, lynching costumes or black face didn't happen. There's a difference between exploring the macabre and being offensive.

Holy cow that poor Mr. Johnson. How people can be capable of doing such horrendous things to a human.
How this Mom participated and think her pictures were no different than selfies, vacations, and babies is beyond me.. If she cannot see the racism means it's acceptable in their world. I guess it is since it's not the first time. It's so freaking scary.
I have seen a few white people dressed up as a black person for Halloween.. A guy dressed up as a Rastafarian Cheerleader. He did it to be funny. I was young and dumb and didn't see any harm in it at the time. I have matured and understand the significance now.

Some people refuse to recognize racism when it is right there in front of them. They will make excuse after excuse, down play it, call it harmless, a joke, try to tell us we didn't see what we saw, we misunderstood, or what someone else has done is worse.
They will claim we have our panties in a wad, we are too pc, they have a right to their opinion.
Until everyone stands up and says it is not OK. These assholes will keep winning.

Which I normally wouldn't think would happen but your OP said you saw it on a California friend's newsfeed which means it's out there everywhere. Who knows what that brings. Hopefully not to school because none of the kids need that kind of stuff

I had all three of my kids block him so that people shopping around don't connect them. My youngest just got to school and they have the Windows taped and police on duty. Secretary says there isn't a direct that to the school, police dept says there isn't a lot of info just yet.
I'm going to get my kid.
